we got ds a blow up 22inch pool for the summer. im wondering any tips to keep it clean so we dont raise our water bill in the effort to keep us home due to gas prices. it would outrageously raise our water bill to re-fill it everyday or even every other day. wonderin if anyone else had this problem.

That's what I hate about those smaller pools. I used to add a couple of drops of liquid chlorine bleach to make the water last a little bit longer. However, when it was obvious it needed to be changed, I used the water for plants around the yard (the chlorine had evaporated by then so they weren't harmed).

We have an inground spa, so we have the floating chlorine holder in it. We purchased an identical, but just a bit smaller one (quite inexpensive at Home Depot or pool store) and get the smallest size chlorine tablets to put in it to prevent algae growth and other things. If we were to leave the water in there more than a week at a time, we would probably put some of the acid in it, too, but I prefer not to mess with it, so we wouldn't have to worry too much about the dosage.

You can buy some shock for pools at many places such as Wal-Mart. It won't take much of it and it will keep the water from turning to yuck. You shouldn't have to replace the water as often. You will need to cycle the water unless you have a pump on it.

If you don't know how the product works they have a great telephone system and are very happy to help. I know this because I have had to call them before.

Can you buy a cover? I have a skimmer and floating clorinator. I only put one tablet in until it dissolves.

Our cover tore for our inflatable pool and I decided to replace it with The Little Tikes 8x36 pool. It comes with a cover and pump for $100. I think it will be worth it not to change the water.

With all due respect, I wouldn't suggest using shock for that...Shock is just that, strong. It easily throws the balance off, so if you do such a thing, you should get test strips (very inexpensive) to test the water. How do I know? I was silly enough to put some into our spa...threw it waaaaayyy off. Had to drain and refill (800 gal!) because it couldn't be brought back in (we were working w/our pool store, trying to do it, but it was just too far out of wack). Muriatic acid and baking soda can help balance it out.

I just don't know how the plastic/vinyl holds up against the muriatic acid and shock, or even chlorine.

I would get a cover for it maybe. I wouldn't put any chemicals in it as I wouldn't want my kids to play in it everyday. Could you try putting a few drops of tea tree oil in it? I know it works for a lot of other things the same way bleach does so maybe it would help keep it cleaner longer.

I put a cap full of bleach in mine every time I change the water. I also use a cover and with doing these 2 things, am able to go about 4 to 5 days without changing the water. I do recommend if you don't use the pool for a few days that you make sure it gets some sun without the cover or the water will get slimy.
