I have two Evenflo Triumph 5's which I love (inexpensive, but rated very well by Consumer Reports, even compared to Britax). The new Evenflo Triumph Advance will allow you to keep a child rear facing until 35 pounds and forward facing in a 5 point harness until 50 pounds.
My 4 year old did outgrow his Triumph 5 last fall (I have the older model which is only for up to 40 pounds and 40 inches) so we invested in a Sunshine Kids Radian 65 carseat. This will keep him in a 5 point harness for up to 65 pounds. It is cheaper than most Britax seats (at $200), has a steel frame, and has done very well on crash tests. Sunshine Kids is a smaller company so they're not as easy to find as Britax, but they are available ( Comfort First has free shipping on theirs). I have heard that they can be difficult to install correctly rear facing (not an issue for us since my son is 4 1/2) but it can be done. I have no complaints about it so far at all.
