Here is an article with little tips on taking a 'staycation' instead of a vacation. (Although you will have to ignore the "buy a new grill" tip. Not such a money saving tip.)
Washing windows doesn't sound like much of a vacation to me! I think sometimes it's hard for us to take that mental break when we're at home. We stay in "work" mode and I find myself wanting to do stuff like laundry, check my email, clean, etc... How do you take time off when all of your regular everyday chores are still surrounding you? That's our biggest challenge.
Usually we take vacation to work on home improvement projects. But we will set aside a day or so to go to the zoo or a movie or something special we never normally do.

I would have no problem taking a week off of the non-necessary things around the house. I would definitely save the laundry until the last 2 days of the "vacation". lol

We were planning on doing this - fixed up the backyard and everything. We even tried to have our spa fixed so we could enjoy it - turned out the leak still isn't fixed and they currently can't find it. More money spent on it than a cheap vacation would have cost - not happy about this - really wishing we would have just traded it in at this point as now we probably can't do that.
We already have a grill so we have been grilling more and have outdoor furniture. We are working on fixing up the house to make it feel more resort liek but unfortuneatly it isn't really in the budget. Our backyard is still a long way from finished but still is something we can enjoy.
DH is taking a couple of days off this week and we are going to the Fair and maybe a couple of other things around town - DH still wants to go out of town but I want to wait until August - save up some more money first. DH is complaining he is bored right now though and bugging me.
We always do this but we stay at our river place where we are unplugged. You could say we take a mini-vacation every weekend anyway. We take a daytrip to an amusement park for kids< 12.

This is my problem with staying home for vacations.

I miss our cabin at the lake.
