I found this article interesting even though I knew most of it already. I am still guilty of going there because of the "Cheapness" of it all.

I have noticed that dollar store things are smaller. And if something is the same size as something I could get at Walmart it does cost a little more. But, when I can't get to walmart, dollar general is cheaper than the grocery store on some things...Good article!

It depends on what you are buying. I know the spices are more at the dollar store than at Wal-mart. I can get them for .50 each at wal-mart. I buy party plates there because the are cheaper and cards for misc reasons.

Thanks for the article. I stay away from the dollar store. I used to stock up on preschool workbooks but noticed they weren't much a deal because they have so many fewer pages.

This is why I take a calculator with me - I can compare unit price vs the price of the package. I thought it was cheaper to buy Cherios at Target on sale but found out it was much cheaper at Costco. I always wondered about the really small packs of zip locks and such there as well. I guess my better instincts were dead on.

I avoid dollar stores usually (except for gift bags) I feel, over all, that they are environmental nightmares.

I agree that there are deals to be had at the Dollar Tree, but I do my math and have found items that cost less at Costco or other stores when on sale. The greeting card prices can't be beat in my area, nor the gift bags or mylar balloons. Dollar Tree sells them for $1.00, and across the street at Safeway, they are close to $4.00 each. I also find the best prices there for my dog's rope toys.

I totally agree!!! Most of the recall stuff on the CPSC gov website includes items found at the dollar store....much of it has lead. So, no, I never go. At this point, my kids think they'll get lead poisoning by just walking in and breathing the air.
