There is a really really interesting and thought provoking article here on mommysavers you have GOT to read.
http://mommysavers.com/frugal-food-r...ocery-bill.htm

the basic premise of the article is that we throw away WAY too much food, therefore we are wasting money. My question is, do you find yourself throwing alot of food away that your kids don't eat or waste?? I find this more in MY house essp with supper. If my kids don't like it, they won't even attempt to try it. And I end up throwing away full plates of supper that they havn't even stuck a fork into. Its frustrating and it aggravates me that we waste so much. The old saying "my eyes are bigger than my belly"

I do practice portion control, I know that Samantha will only be able to finish 1 piece of toast for breakfast, and Meghan likes 2 packages of oatmeal and will eat all of it. Cameron is pretty much a bottomelss pit, so no worries there.

Do you find your family wastes food like this also?? How do you deal with it?

This is a sore spot with me too. I throw away tons of food. My family just doesn't like left overs. So we'll bring home "doggie bags" from restaurants or I'll have left overs from dinner. They all just sit in the fridge until they grow green stuff then I throw them away. Sometimes as I'm putting stuff away I wonder, "WHY BOTHER?" because I know it'll never be eaten. I just cleaned out the fridge on Thurs and couldn't believe how much stuff I threw away.

I agree, my kids aren't much into leftovers either so when I DO make 'big' meals, I try to not have alot left over because I know it will never get eaten. For instance, when I portion out pork chops into the freezer, I try to put 5 per freezer bag so that I only cook those 5. More than that sits forever. Usually 4 chicken breasts is plenty, 2 breasts will feed all 3 of my kids if they are big enough.

My dh will usually have leftovers for his breakfast, essp if its something he likes. But when he isn't here, the food is just wasted.

We really don't throw away hardly any food. Pretty much everything is eaten at my house. I refuse to throw food away.

I try to portion everything so that we don't throw much away. We have 1-2 leftover nights each week to use up as much as we can. If dh and I want something that the kids don't like, I try to just make enough for us and let them eat something else so they don't waste it.

I love leftovers! When we have left overs from a steak resturant we have the best breakfast the next day. Chop up those loaded baked potatos (sometimes I through in an extra one from home) and heat them in a pan. Then through in your choped up leftover steak. Then fry up some eggs. My husband loves it! Also I'll save just about anything and put it in a soup. The problem is, when I really like a soup I can't always recreate it.

We don't waste as much as we used to, but we do waste some. I have started freezing leftover canned veggies for soup, separating out my pork chops and other meats into portions that we will use, and trying to save as much as I can for lunches or to add to supper the next day. Also, my SIL gave me the idea of buttering and toasting leftover hamburger and hot dog buns in the oven to use in place of dinner rolls. It's actually good and since we rarely use an entire pack of buns, it cuts back on waste. All of that being said, we still waste way more than I would like and our grocery spending still isn't where I want it to be.

Oh I have started saving the leftover veggies too! I almost ALWAYS buy frozen veggies in the bags, so if I cook too much, I just freeze the leftovers. When I have enough in the freezer, I just thaw and reheat for another meal. If they are leftover this time, I just leave them in the fridge or throw them away. But its MUCH easier to do it this way and reuse them elsewhere.

Thankfully, not much. I don't cook, on a daily basis, in such a way that I have leftovers.

Something that I do throw away is celery. I never seem to be able to use it all up completely before it gets all limp. Also I end up throwing out half used containers of things...like 1/2 a container of sour cream, when I needed half for a recipe. And then, since we don't eat sour cream on potatoes or anything, it just goes bad.

we don't throw much away. I try to stagger my meals so I don't make something with leftovers every night. I've gotten really good at portioning out the right amount to not have extras. I'm lucky because dh will take lo's for lunch, so I rarely have to throw something away.

I also do a good job buying exactly what I need so I don't waste extra ingredients. I do have moments where I have to buy more than I need and then forget to find a use for the rest of it. Celery is also one of my downfalls
