We love havng fresh bread, too. It is very convenient when you don't want to make a special trip for bread. Another way to be self sufficient!

check your craigslist listings. i found three listings for nearly new machines (all of them under $30) and emailed them to my mom. she's looking for one now that they've discovered my dad is allergic to soy (and there's soy protein or something in store-bought bread, so he can't eat it). there are plenty of people out there who bought one of these and don't use it, so their loss is your gain girls!!

And Chatsalot, is your long-lasting friend even available these days?
Nope... I bought my sister the "newest" model last yr for Xmas.. makes a horizontal loaf and up to 3lb loaves!

Granted... I only use mine to make the dough, then a split it in 1/2, put it in 2 bread pans and bake it in my real oven... i'm not big on the tough crust and hole in it from the paddle, so baking it in the oven solves my 'complaints'.

But if it were to die, (knock on wood!!) I'd buy a B&D again without hesitation!!

I see bread machines at Goodwill pretty often. Most recently, there was one for $5.25! I have one already, but what a deal! All you'd have to do is Google search for the manual for that particular brand and model number and order it online. Manuals don't cost much.

If you can figure out how to use the machine without a manual, there are a lot of websites that offer "generic" bread machine recipes.

We make lots of bread, rolls and pizza dough with our bread machine.

We put it on our Christmas list the first year we were married (since we hadn't received it off our registry) and DH's grandma bought it for us. 8+ years later it is still going strong, and I think she's tickled that we still used it ALL.THE.TIME and think of her when we do.
