How do you keep from going broke when the Ice Cream Truck comes down your street?

We realized last year we were asking for trouble by pointing it out to Maggie when she didn't care. So now we just ignore it. She hasn't figured it out yet, but I'm sure some of your kids have!

I have an ice cream truck fund set aside because, trust me, I don't need to point it out to DD when they come into the block. Cash is deposited into the envelop monthly. When it runs out, it is gone. Once she realized she needed to spread it out a bit, I didn't have any problems.

I limit them to the $1.50 or less items, and usually just twice a week. Last summer the library gave coupons as one of the reading prizes so hopefully they do that again.

That's a good idea. Maybe this summer, deposits to the ice cream truck account will be based on reading time.

We RARELY see an ice cream truck around here....and never the old fashioned mr softee I remember!! I just stock up on popsicles all spring when they are on sale and we enjoy those anytime they want them...I do try to take them for ice cream once a week or so and it is a good incentive for them to "be good".....

Honestly, I'm scared of the whole ice cream truck thing! I mean it's not like I'm "terrified" but honestly, you don't know the credentials of the men (usually I see men running those things) handing out the icecream. I guess I'm on major "pedophile awareness" mode. It does make me a bit paranoid sometimes.

But hey, I would rather stock my freezer with 5 different kinds of ice cream treats, then spend the money on one treat. It's just so expensive!

If your daughter figures out the whole icea cream truck thing and you don't want her to participate in that, what I personally would do, is that when you do your weekly shopping or whatever, let her pick out a box of popcicles or an icecream treat of her choice. Then, whenever she hears the truck, she can run to your freezer and have her choice of the treats she has previously picked and you know she will like! =)

Thankfully, my kids aren't huge fans of the ice cream truck. They aren't big ice cream eaters and only like a few specific things. I stock those things in our garage freezer, so when they want one, they just ask.

That's a great idea. I am usually willing to spend more at the grocery store to keep from spending even More elsewhere.

Just what I was going to suggest. Let her try it once, figure out her favorite, and then stock up on that, and let her have one when the truck goes by.
