Just because I know of two different people that this happened to this past week. Both lost their deep freezers full of food. One of them had just put a pig and a half to store in there.

One, the one with the pig, her deep freeze just went out and died without her realizing it for a couple of days. To make matters worse, it didn't die, it went into defrost mode and heated the whole thing up. That was a mess.

The other one, she had a yard sale and someone (her MIL naturally) had unplugged the deep freeze to show someone that something they were selling actually worked and never plugged the deep freeze back in.

Not a happy day in either of those households.

This is one of my biggest fears. Ours is a front open and Jamie will open the door and mess around before I can get to him and get him away. I check the freezer literally 3 or 4 times a day now because one time I caught him after he had turned the dial way down.

I would be pissed off at the MIL who did that.

I try and check ours every day to make sure it's still working, especially if we have recently bought part of a cow.

We had that happen to us a few years ago. We didn't realize that anything had happened and went to get something out of it and I almost died when I opened it. Turns out there was a problem with the power outlet. It took us forever to get the smell out so we could use it again. We make sure to check at least every other day to make sure everything is all right.

Oh no!! I can't imagine the sense of frustration that must accompany losing a freezer full of food. When I was growing up, my parents would fill a freezer every year and it needed to feed us through the winter. That would have been a terrible hardship for them.

As far as kiddos getting in it, I'd put one of those appliance straps on it that you get in the babyproofing section at BabiesRUs

We had it happen when we were on vacation once. The power went out in the basement. Luckily it wasn't full or really expensive food - vegetables etc. The smell was unbelievable though. I didn't use it again for months!

ADD ME TO THAT LIST! TODAY! DH got ice out for the cooler this morning and then crammed all his dumb gallon jugs of ice back in and didn't make sure the door was closed. Neighbors had filet mignon on us tonight. We had filet too. Cooked 3#s of hambuger, a pound of ground turkey and 2 big pork tenderloins.

Yip its a scary thing. Our freezer went - however DH picked up on it quickly - but I had to load all my meat off to my mil - twenty mintues away. It took two weeks for them to fix that freezer.
