I know I had seen a post on this before, but couldn't find it. We listed all the tricky things supermarkets do to get you to buy more or spend more. Maybe we should start one again?

The one I can add is that they put the "staples" in the back; milk, eggs, etc. so you have to walk through the entire store to get to them.

Another one -- the rotisserie chickens in the front - smelling oh so good right at suppertime? That's no coincidence either!

I usually shop early mornings, but Friday I ran to the store to get some ice cream that they had on sale.

It was around 4:30 pm and it was PACKED. I couldn't believe how many people shop at that time of day on a Friday! Anyway, I noticed that there were a ton of rotisserie chickens lurking around...I am pretty sure one was following me around the store. Now I know why.

They also put the sugary cereals, cookies, and other junk at eye level for kids. My dd really likes the multi grain flake cereal I buy for myself though so their tactics don't work on her.

She also doesn't ask for candy at the checkout...she does straighten out the displays though...

We have 2 local stores that have these 10 for $10 sales. Many people believe they have to buy 10 of that item or mix and match in quantities of 10 - but they don't! Little known fact the registers automatically discount each item so that you pay only $1 for each that you buy.

I had heard that WALMART will put a display in the middle of the isles, and it is usually NOT the lowest priced item. they do this so that you will see it, and go to the section with the items and check them out to find a lower priced item. Usually, you will walk out with that item or one even higher priced after you see them all.

Usually the store brand (cheaper) items are on the bottom and you have to look for them.

So true- and the name brands are all at the ends of the aisles - grocers pay a premium to have them there where you are most likely to need something and just grab it at the end of the aisle rather than have to walk down. Have you noticed that Pepsi is at one end of the soda aisle, and Coke the other?

I love the $10 for 10 trick/3 for $3.00, etc. I get this weird satisfaction when I "buck the system" and just buy one or 2!!!

Also. all the flowers are at the front to get you in a "green" mood!

I've also read that the least expensive, yet most healthful items are on the perimeter of the store fruit, bakery, deli, meats, etc. The high ticket items are in the aisles...

The item size that is the highest cost per unit is usually the one that's at eye level... a lot of times you'll find that even the smaller sizes on the top shelf break down to the a better price per unit.

How about the myth that buying a larger size will be cheaper per unit.

Sometimes it is the case, but sometimes it is cheaper per unit to buy another size. I always check the unit price on the label underneath the item.

At a lot of stores, you can buy one of something that is BOGO and get it half price, instead of buying 2 (one at "full price", one "free").

There are usually no clocks. And every store I go into that has a clock, it's broken. If they can get you to think you've got plenty of time to shop, you'll meander around and be more willing to go down more aisles.

Endcaps that have products put up that go together so you buy them on impulse. Ex: tortilla chips & salsa

Constantly moving things around so you have to go looking for what you normally or want to buy (this drives me BONKERS and is the main reason that I don't go shopping at multiple stores for my groceries)

You have to watch out though because sometimes the store brand is more expensive than the name brand. That happened to us the other day at HyVee. We were getting juice boxes and the price on the HyVee brand was cheaper however you only got 8 juice boxes when the name brand was a few cents more but you got 10 boxes.
