So after reading dozens and dozen of posts about maintaining a pantry and keeping an inventory of what you already have on hand, I actually DID it! We saved over $40 at the grocery store this week. Here's exactly what we did...(this won't be news to some of you veterans, but hopefully it'll help some of us newbies!):

On Sunday, we returned from our out-of-town trip to a kitchen w/o milk, butter, eggs, bread, etc. We were about to head off to the store to stock up again, when I mentioned to dh that maybe we should go through the freezer to see what we could use up in the next week. Oh my goodness! One thing led to another and we ended up emptying out not just the freezer, but the fridge, and the pantry. We inventoried every item of food that we had in the house! I then took that list and made up meals from that list. I found that we had enough food on hand to make about 10 full dinners!!!

Of course, we had to pick up a few odds & ends (including the aforementioned bread, milk, etc.), but we only spent about $20 at the store this week. Amazing!!! :happy dance:

You can also freeze bread and milk next time you go out of town for when you get back.
