I have an idea of what loss leaders are in the grocery ads, but I have a question.
Are the loss leaders only listed on the front and back pages and everything in between is NOT a loss leader? Is the front and back pages "always" the good deals or do they stick stuff on there that is not a good deal just to get you thinking it is?

Please enlighten me, I am heading to the grocery store soon!

Loss leaders are the items grocery stores (and other stores) sell at a loss to get you in the door. Typically, they're on the front page, sometimes the back. I suppose in theory they could be anywhere in the flier, but it makes more sense to put them front and center. Most are pretty obvious; like Get a Free Pound of Grapes When you Spend $10 or something like that.

Thanks Kim, that helps out!
We are on a VERY tight budget, our transmission just went out on our truck and to fix it will cost $1800-2400.! Needless to say, our emergency fund will be depleted and then some. Just when you think you might get ahead in the game of life.............

I just discovered what loss leaders are, too. I've spent a good deal of time over the last few weeks putting a pricebook spreadsheet together with all the prices of things that I usually buy at Walmart, and compare those with the sales fliers of the other supermarkets. That is really pretty helpful! I didn't realize that those big expensive grocery stores do actually have cheaper prices than Walmart sometimes!

Loss leaders are a way to get you in the store, but sometimes buy beware. I've seen stores drop prices on an item when the expiration date is nearing. For example Miracle Whip was on sale for $1.19 only the date on the jar was a week away. So here is my trick: I take the sale ad to Walmart and get that same $1.19 price only the date on the jar is farther away.
