I've heard of people buying half (or 1/4, etc) a butchered cow from a cattle farm - how do you go about doing that? Is it one of those things where you just have to be lucky enough to know someone?

Part of it's knowing someone, but it's not that hard to know them!

Bet bet if you don't know any farmers or have no place to begin is to find a feed store - usually in smaller towns, they are located by the railroad tracks. Ask the folks that work there if they know anyone that sells meat from their cows. You may be able to contact a farmer, and then you can find out for sure how the cows are raised (if that is something you wish to know about)

Another way is to find a good meat store and ask them if they sell meat bulk like a half (side) or quarter. You can usually start in the yellowpages, and just call around.

thanks i'm going to run this idea by DH.. I'm also going to talk to my parents - they bought a side of beef this year and I may be able to buy from the same source they did and just freeze it and bring it back with me from a visit there.

Do you have a meat store/butcher in your area? That's where we go to get ours.

One option is to go to your local fair and buy an animal at the auction or find an FFA or 4H kid that is interested in selling their animal. You may have to pay a little more than market price that way, but the animals will be fed better and taste better than a feed lot animal. You will also be supporting a child's project. Another advantage to buying meat this way is you will be able to have the butcher prepare the meat the way you like it.

I just ordered a cow today :-) I am not sure where you are - here we have a "packaging" company. Try doing a yellowpage search for "meat packaging". Our local butcher is alot more expensive. The one I ordered today was 2.19 a pound - 650-700 pound average and the best part is they are certified organic. It is so worth it for us.
