After reading on here how some of you only spend $50 a week on groceries, I have been looking at my grocery budget more closely. I generally allot $300 a pay period (every two weeks) for groceries. Now keeping in mind that when I say groceries I mean tp, pull ups, all HBA (I shop at Walmart-one stop shopping!). Also keep in mind that I just changed my birthcontrol to a cheaper brand-I was paying 40 then it went down to 30, now it should only be around 9 a month. So I am challenging myself to only spend $100 a week on groceries. That would be a savings of about $200 a month. And we really need that $200! I hope that I can do it. We eat meat with every meal. And I like to make alot of our dishes from scratch. I do make out a menu for the week before I go shopping. I have started to clip coupons that will help. I tried Aldi, but wasn't impressed. The items I bought we good, but I felt like I was sacrificing nutrtional value with their items (ex cream of chicken 41% dv of sodium! eek! and the spaghetti sauce had high fructose corn syrup in it! double eek!) I went to Walmart today and bought groceries for the week and I only spent $85. Hopefully I won't have to go back this week, sometimes I forget things. If I can make this work we won't be under so much financial pressure.

Good job.
I found that if I look at cutting the grocery budget as a game or a challenge rather than as a dire necessity it's easier for me to do.

This month I too have joined into this game of $100 a week. I have a little more challenging a chore though as I do groceries for 9 people. But we live on a farm, and supply our own milk, beef, chicken, lamb and eggs. I know you are looking at this and going wow lucky. Yes it saves on meat but its all the other things, the cereal, margarine and special diet items.

Anyway I did groceries last week for $85. and this week for $64. I shopped at the serve yourself type store , bag it yourself and pay for the cart type store, which isn't normal for me. I think the shopping was worth the trouble ( and trouble it was with snow up to my waist and a 2 month old in tow!).

We eat at least one if not two meatless meals a week. I have learned to be creative with soups, make a lot of it so there is some leftover for lunches. Monday's my husband plays hockey so its always a pasta night, sometimes without meat. It all saves.

$85 is a great start! Igot by with $81 at the grocery store but ended up spending another $57.28 at Target...but still much better than in the past! I am actually getting ready to make a menu going shopping from my own cupboards and freezer right now!

I am always forgetting something too. I have solved it by not going back to the store unless it is a dire emergency. Good luck with the new budget.

Sounds like you are doing good. I have since spent $47 at Aldi for next weeks food. I still need a few items. I am off to Walmart tomorrow to purchase those. Unfortunately I didn't make my menu before I went to Aldi, so I hope I didn't mess up my budget! I will update on how I did for week 2.
