I noticed from the garden thread that they are many gardeners here. This is somthing that I would like to do, but I don't know a lot about. Can anyone recommend a good book? Gardening for dummies, maybe. Also - What is your best gardening tip?

Where ever you get your plants they usually come with tips on how much water, sun or shade they need. It will tell you when to plant them and also how far apart to plant them.

The instructions are on the back of seed packets or on little sticks that are in the plants.

The main thing is not to underwater or overwater and not let the sun bake them.

If you havne't ever had a garden start small. Like with cucumbers and squash or okra. These are usually very hardy and do really well. Tomatoes are sometimes hard to grow. I do grow tommy-toes in pots and they do really well.

Also use potatoe peels and coffee grounds and eggshells around your plants. This gives them nutritants that they need to produce.

What ever you decide to grow, good luck and happy growing!

One book I really liked was Square Foot Gardening. It was mainly for gardening in small spaces, but it talked a bit about when to plant, how close to plant, etc. A great resource!

Ask at your garden center too, they know what does/does not do well in your area

I get a lot of information from the Organic Gardening and Mother Earth News websites. I also have the book: Organic Gardening for Dummies - that's not as useful as I thought it would be.

I am also interested in gardening. I think it's such an easy way to save some money.

Does anyone know if using dishwater is ok to water flowers and vegetables? I do dishes by hand and would like to just use that water to water everything if it's ok.

You will need to check the detergent you use. Otherwise it would probably be ok.

Is there anything specific that I should be looking for? I just use Dawn so I think it would be ok.
