I read this tip somewhere: buy the cheaper ground beef that is the 75% or 80%, brown it like you normally would, then rinse it with water to rinse off the fat. Has anyone done this? Does it taste different or do you even notice when it is mixed in with other ingredients?

This is what I do and it has less flavor. I just add a little more pepper and garlic...or whatevever, if I think about it. Otherwise I don't think it's too noticeable.

I do this all the time. I do not notice if it tastes different. But I always add pepper, salt, garlic powder and minced onions or onion powder to my hamburger that I cook up for anything from hamburger gravy, hamburger helper and meat for spagetti sauce.

I did an experiment not too long ago re: the fat content in hamburger and price per pound. Our question was = do you get more meat for the price because there is less fat??

I bought a pound of 85/15 ($2.35/lb) and 73/27 ($1.79/lb). I used our food scale to measure each one to assure I was using the exact same weight and browned both batches. The amount of fat (weight wise) I drained off of each pan WAS EXACTLY THE SAME!! (75g = .16lbs) There was more water evaporation with the 73/27 leaving less actual meat ~ however it was the most cost effective per pound (with the prices I paid). The amount of actual meat difference left over between the two was actually quite minimal (like 83g = .18lb).

It was interesting to see that even though you are paying higher prices for a smaller fat content ~ you aren't really getting anything different ~ so it really shouldn't taste any different.

HIllbillyhousewife has an article about this very thing. That article is what inspired me to buy 70 lbs of the 75% hamburger a couple of weeks ago when it was on sale for .99 a lb. I also have never noticed a taste difference. Just remember to rinse with hot water.

I buy hamburger in large packages when it's on sale, and boil it all at once. Can't remember where I heard of this, but I really like doing it that way. I usually add a couple pounds of ground turkey to the pot - no one can tell. Then I freeze it in recipe-sized portions.
