for those of you who only shop bi weekly or monthly, how do you deal with fresh produce??

It spoils with in a week lol

I would like to only shop every 2 weeks but that is the reason I do not

We eat a fresh salad every day for lunch, and have fresh steamed veggies at least 3 times for supper

DD also takes fruit for lunch at school apples last longer I understand that, but things like melon, grapes etc do not

I have even tried those egg thingy's to help prolong produce life in their drawer.... crap... do not work!

What do you do?

I experimented with bi-weekly shopping and it was not worth it to me. I need to go to the store every week for produce anyway.

I use green bags. I picked them up at Bed, Bath & beyond. My produce stays fresh longer. It helps when produce is on sale too.

I'll buy 2 weeks worth of food on my trips, but then go back the next week for ~$5-10 worth of produce (whatever is on sale). We are huge fruit eaters here, particularly strawberries and grapes that spoil quickly.

I can not get around having to go back to the store weekly for fruit either. But than I am usually headed there for milk so it isnt a big deal. I also buy the bags of unsweetended dole fruit too. Last time I got blueberries and strawberries. We use them for everything from blueberry bread/muffins and to blueberry, banana and strawberry smoothies. Kids love to snack on frozen blueberries. A nice treat when it is hot out. Gonna use the blueberries for waffles tomorrow!

Do those green bags really work? I have been wanting to try them. I like bananas when they first get ripe and I'd love to slow down the process.

For anyone with a Costco membership, they have nice big bags of frozen fruit - either mixed berries or a fruit medley (cantaloupe, strawberries, pineapple, etc.) Great for smoothies!

I invested in some Fridgesmart containers by Tupperware. I made squash casserole for supper last night and I've had the squash for around 2 weeks or so. After 2 days in original saran wrap tray, I put them in the Fridgesmart and they were still good. My hubby said it was so awesome. I think Tupperware was a good investment and it helps me stay green by not using so much plastic wrap and etc. (But I didn't want to pay full price so I signed up so I could get the discount.)

They do work. I have been using them for awhile. We eat a lot of banana's here. So I buy a bunch when I go to TJ's (19 cents a lb). If you separate them from each other that will slow down the ripening process. I then put them in the green bags and that slows the process more. Sometimes they aren't even ripe enough when we are ready for them. I just used them on my strawberries and they lasted longer too. You can use each bag up to 10 times. I love them.
