If you have a bread machine, have you figured out the cost of making bread vs. buying?

I figured out that each loaf I make is $1.66. Where I live I can't get bread cheaper than $2.19.

Now, if I make sure to get enough supplies to make bread from Walmart when I'm out of town, I can make it cheaper, but flour, yeast, honey, etc. are all about twice as much here in town.

Stock up on flour and all that around the holidays to make it even cheaper!

It will be a long time before I pay for the breadmaker with the savings on my homemade bread but it is fresh, tastes better and I know what I put in it!

I like the flavor.. makes the best butter buns, adn cinnamon buns. I haven't found a huge savings on the bread, this is becuase my husband will not use the bread for standard items since he cannot slice it even.

Problem we have is bread machine products taste so much better, that they get eaten much FASTER!!! So we eat more of them.. Therefore costs more in a twisted way...

I love my bread machine though adn would recommend it to anyone. I use it to make the dough, adn do the last step in teh oven.

I'd say we save money, and everything tastes better than store bought. I use mine more for the dough setting than baking. Pizza dough and cinnamon roll dough are our favorites.

I love our bread machine and I do believe it does save us money. We have a Sunbeam Model 5891 and I love it!! It has 12 functions on it, including making making jam and jelly. I make Carrot Cake in mine also. It is wonderful. I do use the dough setting quite a bit. I am about to start making Pita Bread in my bread machine because Pita Bread has now risen to $2.99 per dozen at the Ethnic Markets. They were just at $1.89/dz 3 months ago. We make Pizza Dough in our bread machine every Friday for Friday night pizza night.

IMO, I do think Bread Machines can be a money saver!

I think over time it will. I can still get white bread cheaper at the Wonder Bread outlet, but we enjoy the wheat bread recipe for the bread machine and that is cheaper to make it at home. It's nice to have so if I'm running low I can make some white bread, and save money on gas if I'm not going in that direction anytime soon.

Does anyone have some bread machine recipes or a website with some good ones? I have a bread machine that I'm very interested in using, but I seem to be a bread machine retard. I've tried to use it twice with very little success.

I'd love some recipes too. I've bought mixes from The Prepared Pantry (oops, typed panty first ) and they are okay. But I really want to find a good wheat bread recipe. I like my wheat bread slightly sweet. I wouldn't even mind a multi-grain recipe. A plain white bread recipe too. As long as they are healthy! I have lots of honey I can use to sweeten.

There are many bread machine recipes in our Kitchen section. I will try to bump some of them up.
