With the price of milk going up I was curious to know how this has affected everyone.

Do you buy less of it?
Do you use alternative milk products?
Do you water it down to get a little more out of it?

Our family goes through a lot of milk. I'm curious to see how we can cut some corners on the cost of buying milk !

I don't cut corners with nutrition. However, I would cut back to the recommended amount of milk per person if my family was going overboard with it.

No, we havn't gotton to the point yet where we need to cut down with food. I'm not sure what we would do if it came to that yet. With 3 small kids, I can't right now imagine not giving them milk, or give them watered down milk.

My boys would drink milk and juice all day long if they could. I water down both. They get the recommended amounts throughout the day.

I water down juice for this reason. If they will only drink juice or milk, I would water it down and make sure they get enough overall.

I personally don't water down the milk b/c my youngest needs the fat and calories from a full serving. I can't blame families for making the choice to water down to save money.

I try with the water, I really do, but some days that's just one of the battles I don't want to fight. A splash of juice makes them think they are getting juice, lol.

I think we just had this discussion last week?
If you water down whole milk it may taste like skim(or 2%, depending on how much you water it down) but the nutrients aren't going to be the same. Skim milk in the store isn't watered down, they just take the fat out of it.
After reading about it here, I decided to try watering down the milk myself. I usually buy 2 percent, but bought a couple gallons of whole milk. After someone drank a few glasses, I filled it back up with water, shook it up, and tried some when it was cold again. Tasted just like 2 percent to me.
My family will not be lacking nutrition, because they drink milk like crazy. If they didn't drink much milk, I wouldn't do it. We go through at least a gallon a day. I have 6 people in my family. They also eat cheese and yogurt, so they aren't lacking anything.
Anyone worried about nutrition could try mixing up some powdered milk and mixing that half and half with milk. I have done that in the past too. It just all depends on if the powdered milk is actually cheaper than regular milk.

We don't drink enough milk to need to water it down. I think we go through about a 1/2 gallon a week. We're not big milk drinkers but we are really big on cheese & yogert.

Juice I do water down. Not only to save money & make it last longer but because I don't think that DS needs all the sugar that's in the juices.
