Homemade Liquid Laundry Soap- Front or top load machine

4 Cups hot tap water
1 Fels-Naptha soap bar
1 Cup Washing Soda
½ Cup Borax

- Grate bar of soap and add to saucepan with water. Stir continually over medium-low heat until soap dissolves and is melted.

-Fill a 5 gallon bucket half full of hot tap water. Add melted soap, washing soda and Borax. Stir well until all powder is dissolved. Fill bucket to top with more hot water. Stir, cover and let sit overnight to thicken.

-Stir and fill a used, clean, laundry soap dispenser half full with soap and then fill rest of way with water. Shake before each use. (will gel)

-Optional: You can add 10-15 drops of essential oil per 2 gallons. Add once soap has cooled. Ideas: lavender, rosemary, tea tree oil.

-Yield: Liquid soap recipe makes 10 gallons.

-Top Load Machine- 5/8 Cup per load (Approx. 180 loads)

-Front Load Machines- ¼ Cup per load (Approx. 640 loads)

This one says it will work for the front load washers...it's from the Duggar website (18 kids & counting)

Does anyone know if the homemade laundry soap recipes for dry soap work as good as the liquid? I just feel like liquid must work better. I found a couple of more recipes that I got from Homemade Laundry Soap
One was for powdered soap and the other was for liquid soap. Is one better on your clothes than another? I think I am going to try the dry soap recipe today and see if it works better.

Here is the dry soap recipe:
If you prefer powdered laundry soap, then follow this recipe.

Ingredients:
1 bar Ivory Soap
1/2 cup Borax
1/2 cup Washing Soda (found in the laundry isle)

Grate 1 bar of Ivory soap (or other not strongly scented bar soap). Add 1 cup of borax. Add 1 cup washing soda. Mix together and store in air tight container. Use 1-2 tablespoons per load.

I will keep you posted!

The only difference I see in your recipe is that has eliminated the water. Hope it works for you. Let us know.

I made dishwasher detergent the other day and it is made very similar too. Gotta love that Washing Soda.

Using a grater or knife shred the bars of soap. Boil 8 cups of water after water is boiling slowly add shredded soap. Becareful it don't boil over it will quickly. Reduce heat and stir until soap shavings have dissolved, continue stirring for about 5 minutes or so.

Put 3 gallons of water in bucket, add borax and washing soda, STIR. Add soapy hot water to bucket and stir. Cover and let sit for 24 hour. Usually the water and soap will mead together a lot sooner. I use about 1 cup per load. I have a standard washer. I got the recipe from the website. Simpledollar.com just type in the search bar Homemade Laundry soap. I have modified it some to suit me and the way my water reacts to it.
Question. If you have sensative skin is this ok to use? My fiance uses fragrance free detergent but I would LOVE to try this!

I don't know the answer for you. Maybe if you used the soap like ivory or something like that but I really don't know. I have never had any problems with anyone in my family have sensative skin. Sorry I can't help ya more.

It's so nice when you actually discover just HOW much you are saving your family!

I've been making our laundry soap for nearly 2.5yrs and I use a diff. recipe. It uses Fels Naptha Soap...and I save BIG and I personally love the natural smell of it too! No fragrance oils or other garbage like what's put into commerical stuff.

We all have EXTREMELY sensitive skin and had to purchase the higher end commerical detergent that was for babies! And this is PERFECT for us. NATURAL and no other "extras" that irratate our skin.

Can't wait to try this when my stash of laundry detergent runs out. GOt to run to Harris teeter 30 mins away to get the washing soda. Emailed Arm and Hammer to find the nearest store near me. Had looked everywhere for it. Will pick it up Thursday when I have class.

i use the fels-naptha kind, with 1 bar then 2 cups of borax and 2 cups washing soda. my DH is allergic to cheap detergents and this is fine and i've used it on my baby's clothes and diapers since birth and she's never had a problem with it.
