Okay ladies, I am finally motivated to try this! I have always wondered if it would work with my family since we all have sensitive skin. And I love Ivory soap!

Next time I go to the store, I will get enough stuff to make a small batch and try it!

My recipe also calls for Fels Naptha (2 cups finely grated, which is a little more than 1 bar of soap...I've also just used the one bar, and it still works fine), 1 cup washing soda and 1 cup borax.

I prefer the powdered detergent. It just takes 1-2 tbs per load (half that amount for HE washers), and the clothes come out nice and clean. If you like a scented detergent, add essential oil or fragrance oil to the powder. The scent will usually rinse out clean though, but that just means your clothes don't have any excess build-up on them.

You can also make a paste out of the detergent to pre-treat stains. I actually haven't bought oxi-clean for quite awhile because this takes care of most of my tough stains! Sometimes I will let the item sit for a few days or a week, but the stains almost always come out.

just a note for HE/front load washers - you don't need to use the special (way more expensive) detergents you just use way less than the regular recommended amount. I hit an amazing deal on Tide a while back (came back with 6 huge jugs of it haha) and instead the cup or so that is recommended in regular detergents, I just use approximately a tablespoon. Clothes are still clean with no issues with the machine, too much sudsing, etc.

Once my stash runs out I'll have to give the homemade detergent a shot, everyone seems to have had awesome results with it. Anyone know from experience how well doling down the amount would work? Could I do it in just one of my old jugs or is the 5 gallon amount pretty necessary?

I finally found Fels-Naptha soap at my local publix. I have been using Lever Soap and it worked out well also. I made a double batch yesterday (one for me and one for my dd).

I also contacted the Arm & Hammer company about Washing Soda. They sent me a letter with a website address that you can order it. it is CHURCH & DWIGHT CO., INC. -. It seems to be a little bit higher than what I pay at publix but if you can't find it anywhere it is an option.

Using a grater or knife shred the bars of soap. Boil 8 cups of water after water is boiling slowly add shredded soap. Becareful it don't boil over it will quickly. Reduce heat and stir until soap shavings have dissolved, continue stirring for about 5 minutes or so.

Put 3 gallons of water in bucket, add borax and washing soda, STIR. Add soapy hot water to bucket and stir. Cover and let sit for 24 hour. Usually the water and soap will mead together a lot sooner. I use about 1 cup per load. I have a standard washer. I got the recipe from the website. Simpledollar.com just type in the search bar Homemade Laundry soap. I have modified it some to suit me and the way my water reacts to it.

to add some pointers...

for a FREE bucket hit wal marts bakery and ask them to give ya a frosting bucket!!!

The only thing we found hard to find was the washing soda....pool places all cary this...if ya cant find it at wal mart or super markets.(thats where my Mom got it)

I've been making our laundry soap for nearly 2.5yrs and I use a diff. recipe. It uses Fels Naptha Soap...and I save BIG and I personally love the natural smell of it too! No fragrance oils or other garbage like what's put into commerical stuff.

We all have EXTREMELY sensitive skin and had to purchase the higher end commerical detergent that was for babies! And this is PERFECT for us. NATURAL and no other "extras" that irratate our skin.
I have very sensitive skin too and have worried about using the Fels Naptha soap because of the scent. What recipe do you use?

Loved the savings when making this recipe...I used a bar of ivory soap (lavender sent) when making mine. Question> Anyone else find that Borax is hard on their clothes, specifically dulling the colours of cotton clothing?
Also, I like/ love the smell of commercial laundry soap. Anyone have any tips for scenting this type of homemade soap?
