Let's see, Do I leave wet clothes in the washer overnight?...
Yup!- all the time.
We are a family of 6, not including my MIL and FIL and an elderly veteran that we care for. There is always laundry being washed and I often put a load in before bed and I just make sure it's put in the dryer first thing in the AM.
It might have to do with what type of water you have, municipal or well, and if you use liquid softener in the rinse or sheets in the dryer. I have well water and don't normally have a problem with spoiled laundry unless I forget about it all day (which has happened on a rare occasion). I also use the liquid softener in my rinse which may deter spoilage for a few hours.
Also, referring to the post about an odor from the empty washer- try keeping a gallon jug of white vinegar in the laundry room and put about 1/2c. or up to a full cup in the tub of the washer if you won't be using it for a couple of days (lucky weekend, maybe?) It's a natural disinfectant/anti-fungal and keeps the small amount of water that's left in the bottom (the washer pump never sucks it ALL out) from getting stinky. It will not affect your next load.-All-in-all, a Very Cheap Remedy.- Plus, it helps keep your drain pipes from getting built up with soap/softener scum as quickly.
