We have only a dining room table (no kitchen table) so I keep a table cloth on it almost all the time to protect it. I tried place mats, but had the hardest time finding washable place mats. Plus, the boys would put their dirty place mat back in the buffet table drawer, so I switched to table cloths.

I don't have a tablecloth on my table because it's ugly, I have an ugly (vinyl no less) tablecloth on my table to protect it from my kids!
