for floor trim over carpet I put a pc of cardbord undre it wedged and paint so I don't get paint on my carpet, for walls mask off with tape it is a paint but SOOO worth it in the end. We also have been know to remove the trim to paint it and then put it back up depending on the area.

Blue tape and Goof off Goof Off 4.5 oz. Ultimate Remover - FG651 at The Home Depot

This stuff is pretty strong and gets stuff off our hard wood floors.

I use a good angled small-medium sized paintbrush and paint slowly and carefully. Then I use a damp cloth to immediately clean up any smudges or drips. The blue tape always seems to let the paint leak under the edges not leaving clean paint line or pulls off paint when we remove it, so I've stopped using it.

I'll have to keep this in mind.

So you don't use the tape anymore? I've actually thought about it ... in some ways it seems to cause more problems than it is suppose to help with. Not to mention it is super expensive anymore.

I haven't been using it at all the last few projects. This spring I painted the walls and trim in my living room without it.

I don't use tape. I just use a good brush try to go slow. I have realized that I paint the best from a certain direction, and I cut in better on walls, so if I mess up and get trim paint on the walls, I just let it dry and come back and touch it up later. I end up with a better edge that way.

I agree. I do the same.

I also use one of these to do the edges of the walls:

You know, professional painters paint the trim first then cover it and paint the rest.
