Have you not got a pet because of your financial situation? A pet can become part of the family very quickly and with so many people struggling financially these days increase their family size with a pet needs to be a thought out decision. Has anyone not gotten a pet because of their financial struggles these days?

We don't have a pet for this reason. It's not in the budget yet when there are so many other needs first.

We didn't go seeking out pets, but they have found us nonetheless. All of our animals are refugees, and we will cut corners on OUR food budget to make sure that THEY get fed. We took them in, so we're responsible for them, even if it means we have to go without, just as we would be if we had adopted a child.

Have you thought of fostering an animal from the shelter? At ours, they pay for the vet bills if something happens and some of the food. Plus you give the animal a good home until its adopted!

We checked into it but we don't have that here. They do have a one year program for guide dogs in their first year of life. It's for socializing them .. You have to take the dog with you everywhere .. church, restaurants, grocery stores and it wears a 'guide dog in training' coat. They provide everything. Dh thought it would be too hard on the kids to say good-bye to a dog every year. I didn't necessarily agree with him.

Thats a great idea! I wonder if they do that here. My DH thinks I'll get too attached too...I'm sure I will, but its better then them sitting at the shelter! Is so hard for me to go there to donate things since I see them outside in the rain or snow in little cages

We have a bit of a zoo going on. All were animals that were to be euthanized or slaughtered or were injured wild animals and have found there way here. In the situations they were in it was I take them or they end up dead, couldn't live with myself if I'd said no. The chickens, a kitten from a neighbors surprise litter, and a slaughter horse are the only animals that we consciously decided to get.
A lot of the animals I found homes for after receiving them initially because I knew they wouldn't fit in with us long term or because we didn't have the extra budget to stretch to keep a new addition. In some cases I would come home to find a dog, cat, chicken and once even a horse tied up in my yard. So I'd take them in and a few have stayed and a few I've found other homes for. Am just a big softey I guess haha.

Yes we have not gotten any more pets due to our situation.

I had adopted a stray kitten about 2 years ago, but then I could never afford to get her shots or get her spayed. I would keep her in the house as much as possible, but that was next to impossible, and she did have 2 litters of kittens. Everytime she went into heat, I was ready to kill her myself, she sounded like she was dying and she kept us up ALL night long. Finnally my mom found a charity called TEAM (1-888-FOR-TEAM) and they take care of cats for a VERY reasonable price. Last spring I finnally got her an appt, and for $77, they spayed her, gave her all her shots she needed, gave her a flea treatment, and an earmite treatment. they also told me she is allergic to plastic so I had to ditch the plastic food bowls. LOL

right now I have 1 of her kittens we were never able to get rid of, so I guess he's staying. Its a bit less dire since he is a male, but I DO plan on getting him taken care of as well for $77 at the TEAM van.

I now have 3 kitties, and keeping them in food some weeks is just as expensive as keeping the 5 of us fed. They do end up eating table food sometimes, just to stretch out thier dry food, though I know its not that healthy for them.

We would LOVE to get a dog, but again, I just can't justify the cost. Its just another expense we don't need ATM.

I have never had to worry about choosing between feeding my pet or feeding myself but it has been close. We have chosen CERTAIN pets due to the expense. For instance, we don't own horses because we know that would be a budget breaker.

Right now I'm working with impoverished families with children. I can't tell you how many times I hear from people who say they are having a hard time finding a place to live because so many apartments won't take dogs. Huh!?!?! If I was struggling to find a way to put a roof over my children's heads, I'd certainly get rid of the dog if it meant I could get into an affordable apartment. And I really love my dog.

The other issue that bugs me is my humane society charges people to drop off a pet. WHAT IS WITH THAT?!?!? If I can't afford my pet anymore, I certainly can't afford to drop it off at the humane society. What are we supposed to do?

we have a dog now but she is very old and will not be with us much longer. we don't plan on getting another pet and the reason is our kids are getting older and we are not home as much during good weather wich is not fair to a pet.
