We are in the process of finishing our basement. Mind you it will be a "rough finish". Like dh did the dry wall vertical and we are thinking of eventually putting trim piece up to cover teh seams as we know little about taping and mudding. Oh, and we also heard that if you leave your ceilings bare you don't have to pay taxes on it as "finished".

Anyways, I have a blank slate down there. It will be kids room. As my oldest is not even 2 and 1/2, I am wanting something that will grow with them, but can be "cool" for adults to be in as well. We are taking old kitchen cabinets and putting them down there for bar area.

So, I am thinking about painting some walls red and some walls a taupe/cream. Dh is nervous about the red. Do you think that it will get too dark??

I googled, "painting a room red" and pulled up several sites that talk about different ideas, what to expect, etc. You might try that first. Personally, since it is in the basement, I would go for it. It is a room you can always fix later..and it will give you something to play with. My old house had khaki paint and we did one LARGE wall a deep burgundy. It was gorgeous and set off the room just right. My furniture had a bit of burgundy through the print, so I loved it!!

The only thing I would wonder is how much light you have down there. Basements without windows tend to be really dark and lighter colored walls would make it seem lighter. We just finished our basement off a few years ago, and even with a huge window, and a zillion lights it still seems dark. Our walls are sort of a medium (not light, not dark) taupe/green color. If I had it to do over again I might have made them a little lighter. HTH

I'm gonna pm you. I did my downstairs. The area for the tv is done in taupes and the computer area is taupe on the top with a chair rail & red on the bottom. I wanted red on the walls in the worst way & couldn't figure out how to make it look decent. IMO, I finally figured it out!

I love red walls. I don't have a room that calls for it in my house, but I think it would look great!!!

I think the red will be fine, especially with the taupe walls. You can always get some nice lamps if you think it's a little dark. I personally don't mind if basements are a little on the dark side (as long as it's not dungeon dark), I think it makes it cozy!
