I reread the article and it didn't say what size maybe a 2 litter like someone else suggested.

Any size bottle will do, anything that will displace the water in the tank is the point. A woman at my work saves tons of $ on water by showering here at work (in our gym), I never even considered that, she said she's done it for years. She's fortunate to live nearby.

We started doing this a few months ago...I use a 16.9 oz bottle and put some stones in the bottom and filled the rest with water. Flush your toilet and stick the bottle into the corner away from the flap, make sure it remains standing while the tank refills.
We have noticed our water bill has gone down with only this one change (3 toilets, it adds up!)

I did also read though...do NOT use a brick (people used to say you can) but they can disintegrate and cause problems. A plastic water bottle is best.

Great idea.

i tired this and it works. I read though that this is mainly for toilets made prior to 1983 I believe it is. Prior to that date toilets used on average 6 gallons per flush, the newer models use significantly less.

If you are not sure when your toilet was made take the tank lid off and there should be a date stamped into the back of the tank.
