I had this problem last year and Mr. Mom suggested I make traps for them too. He said to use a small mouth jar and put a paper cone in it with some bait. Again, the can get in, but can't figure out how to get out. It worked, I got rid of a ton of them in a week.

put some apple cider vinegar in a small bowl with a few squirts of dish detergent mix together and sit where fruit flies are they will be attracted to mixture

That is an awesome tip with the jars! I've never heard that one before. I will have to try it next time I get them!

Wow!! These are some great ideas! I have also heard that putting a saucer filled with a little red wine will help get rid of fruit flies.

We've got them too. I wonder if it's this time of yr or something. I tried a sugar water mix today hoping they'd drown, but it didn't work. Thanks for all the info. I'll do the vinegar and boiling water for the drains and then the traps. Hopefully that will take care of them before they spread. Yuck!

Right at this very minute, I have several bowls of fruity wine with chunks of melon sticking out of them sitting on my kitchen counter. My theory has been to get the little buggers drunk while they sit on the melon and then hope that they slip into the wine and drown.

The problem is that I hate to waste good wine on them!

I will try the other vinegar-based solutions!!

The fruit flies are driving me nuts too. My problem got out of control when I bought a bushel of tomatoes, and they swarmed them. I tried to hide them in the pantry, but they got in there too. I'm doing the bananna traps tonight! Thank you!

I've got the nasty pests too!!!!! They are driving me nut! We seem to get them every year, around this time. I don't even have any fruit or veggies sitting out. I have done the cup trap and I am getting quite a few. Yesterday was the worst! You would just go to pick something up from the stove or counter and about 7-8 of them would fly up! GROSS!! I was swatting at them all day. I must have gotten quite a few of them because there doesn't seem to be to many today. I'm gonna pour the bleach down the drains too. Hopefully that will kill them off!
