Does anybody know of a good way to get rid of fruit flies? We have a brand new house, and these fruit flies have been living with us for about a month! Help!!

Wish I knew!!!! This may be a silly question, but do they even have to do with fruit? We had them in our kitchen really bad so I quit buying bananas for awhile to see if it helped and put the rest of the fruit in the ice box. We still have them, they are even in other parts of the house. I don't put any food in any trashcans except the kitchen which has a lid and gets emptied daily. I don't know where they come from or how to get rid of them!!!!!!! ARG!!!

I'm glad we're not the only ones with the problem! I feel dirty!! My husband did go online and found a way to make a little trap with a glass, paper, and some apple cider vinegar. That did help quite a bit, but those little bugs are pretty stubborn. He read they can lay 500 eggs at a time!!! gross.

Gosh a month!? Ugh. I would keep all fruit and veggies in the fridge until you get the problem solved. Keep garbage to a minimum in the kitchen, tying it tightly and taking it out of the house frequently. Do any dishes promptly, rinse out your recycling and if possible, keep it out of the house in the garage or something. Make sure they're not breeding in your drain(s)...

We've had them since we painted our kitchen. We CANNOT get them to go away and they are everywhere. Our bathroom is on the other side of the house and they are in there.

How do you keep them from breeding in the drain?? The sinks are used very regularly.

Make a solution of white vinegar and water and spray around where they are. I've also read that the apple cider vinegar traps are supposed to be good.

princessabby, maybe if you pour ACV down your drain periodically, it may get rid of them.

Pour a little ammonia in all your drains. Let it sit for a few minutes. Then flush with boiling water. They lay their eggs in the drains, even in your bathroom drains, because there's a food supply.

This works great for us:

Take a couple small glass jars (I usually use old jam jars) that have been cleaned. Place a chunk of banana in them. Cover tightly with saran wrap and poke 5 or 6 holes on the top (small, but big enough for the flies to get into). After a couple of days there will be tons of flies in them. They get in, but they can't figure out how to get out. After about 4-5 days you want to throw out the jars (I usually seal them off with their original lids so none of the little baby "worm" fruit flies can get out). Do this whenever you notice the problem. It really works well.

Wow, those are good tricks to try. We are so fed up with this. We keep everything spotless, put dishes in the dishwasher immediately, don't leave food or fruit out, change the trash bags VERY often, and those fruit flies are pesky.
