Good morning. I need some advice. Our stove/oven is biting the dust. It's a freestanding gas range and it's about 20 years old and whenever you turn on the oven, there's a strong smell of gas. We are shopping around for a new one. Nothing fancy, but I would like 5 sealed burners and a storage drawer under. Has anyone recently bought a stove/oven? Any recommendations? I've been researching on-line but it's hit or miss and hard to get a definite opinion about brands. I don't want to spend too much $$. Thanks in advance for your help.

Last year at this time, my gas oven/range was having "issues" with odor, etc.. We went for a ceramic top with the sealed burner thing also. I ended up with a Fridgedaire brand. It has 5 burners, one is a warmer burner. The 2 larger burners have the size selection option of choosing for a small or large pan. I have hcad no problems with it. The burners heat up as quick as with the gas range and stay hot for a long time even after shutting them off. The oven is fine, large and functional.

I got it from a local dealer whose price was less than Best Buy. They were also cheaper on delivery etc.. I had looked at Home Depot but I live outside of their delivery area.

Good Luck

In most places, electricity costs considerable more than gas. And chefs prefer gas. in the long run, I think gas is the better option, even if it costs a bit more to buy.

I had a GE that I was very pleased with. I always look for BLACK drip pans. Worlds easier to take care of.

Hi! I have no idea what to buy, BUT we just bought a "new" double oven it cost over $2500 and we got it for $250. We got it at Lowes in the scratch and dent section. It still has a full warrenty, and all that, there is just a scratch down one side. My hubby talked to the manager and knocked him down some $$$ I know that home depot also has this section and it is worth calling them to see what they have!

I had one bad experience with scratch and dent, so I won't do it again. They took it back, but it soured me on that option.

After our 3rd (and hopefully last) flood we had yet another kitchen remodel....including all appliances. I had a sealed ceramic cooktop and separate double electric oven in the kitchen before this. I loved the clean up on the cooktop but as a former restaurant cook I absolutely hated the way it cooked. You couldn't adjust the heat well and it remained hot after shutting it off ( bad for sauces and delicate dishes). They did, however, heat up very quickly. Loved the double ovens....out of the way. easy to get to, loads of room and I prefer electric for baking as gas is too hard to regulate.

That being said....
I now have a Jenn Air dual fuel freestanding range.
Pros:
Gas cooktop, electric oven
Large lower oven, small oven on top that preheats quickly and uses less electric
5 burners
Top oven toasts and broils quickly
Convection and proofing option on bottom oven
In case of flooding...I can jack it up or move it (no joke...this was a consideration when I thought about going back to a freestanding range)
If electric goes out I can still cook on the stove

Cons:
A real beast to clean the enamel cooktop even though it's black...seems to smear alot
Awkward controls on the side
Btu's aren't nearly enough on some burners and too much on others
I'm just not as comfortable with a freestanding range
You have to bend down low to get things out of the lower oven

I really miss my wall ovens..I just didn't have the wall space to put them in this time or I certainly would have. Just make sure you get the right range for your type of cooking. Skip convections unless it's a true convection which happens to cost BIG bucks and are usually seen on commercial grade ovens from Viking or Thermado, it just isn't worth it. As for the cost of an electric oven, well, it's my one splurge. I'll cook in the dark if I have to in order to have an electricoven for baking!
Good luck...there's so many choices out there it can become overwhelming!

This is what we have had for a little over a year and I LOVE it.
Maytag® Maytag® Gas 30 in. Double-Oven Free Standing Range - MGR6775BDB at The Home Depot

it does cost a lot but there are 2 ovens. I love the top one perfect for one pizza. I like to be able to cook 2 diffrent things at diffrent temps at the same time. As for the gas burners very easy to clean. Also a must for us for getting a gas range was the knobs on top and not on the front.
