I have yet to cancel our landline but I have removed all the extensions except one (one phone in the kitchen and one in the basement) and we don't have voicemail on that phone. We have kept the landline for two reasons (1) our satellite TV provider needs the set-top-box hooked up to the landline so they can make programming changes and verify service and (2) I am a member of a grocery shopping rewards program that downloads their data through the phone. Once we move, I'm not sure we'll be quick to hook-up a landline unless we end up living in a bad cell.

It was sad, this morning hubby got a phone call on his cell, then I got a phone call on my cell, then just as I was hanging up my cell we got a call on the landline. It was crazy!

We have thought about this, but I would have to add a line to my cell so we could always have a phone at home. What if I had a babysitter and there was no phone here. What if my kids were home alone (they are old enough to do that for very short periods of time) and they need to get ahold of me? I really prefer talking on my land line. I don't want to talk to people when I am at the grocery or out somewhere, I prefer they call my house phone and leave a message. I will get back to them. I don't like when people call my cell, I rarely remember to check it for messages.

We got rid of our land line about 3 years ago and we don't miss it at all! My husbands job pays for his nextel and service. I have a nextel and I am happy as a clam. We have our cable and internet through comcast.

We only use cell phones. Acouple of years ago, DD called one of her friends every day while home alone long distance and ran our home phone bill up to $ 500. (She did not realize that it was long distance due to the way the area codes are) After that we got rid of teh phone line and everyone has cells now.

We also thought about getting rid of our land line. But my only concern about it is having an emergency at home and not being able to get through to 911 on my cell (sometimes the recepion in and around our house is terrible). Plus whenever I have had to call 911 using my cell...I have had to wait longer than 10 minutes to be connected, have gotten busy signals and hung up on. People die of brain damage in less than 4 minutes! At least with your landline, the dispatcher immediately knows where the call is coming from and can dispatch help immediately (think of how many toddlers/young children have called 911 from the landline when Mommy or Daddy has fainted or fallen unconscious and saved their lives). When you call on your cell phone it takes much longer for them to trace your call.

And another good reason is...when stupid things happen...like today...DH went to work and had my keys in his bag. On top of that my bag with my wallet and cellphone got locked into our car. If I didn't have my landline, I wouldn't have been able to call him to get my keys back. I guess I could have gone to a neighbors house but that would have required me to wake my sleeping baby and leave my house unlocked and unattended.

That's my two cents.

I'm kind of like HappyMom about the cell phone. I don't like to talk to people while driving or shopping, and half of the time the phone is dead or dying. I have a prepaid cell because it was too expensive to have the monthly charges for what little it was used. We still have a landline because my DH's work has required him to have a home phone.

I've been thinking about this over the past couple of months. We have Nextel for our cell phones (which I cannot stand) - our contract is up in January and I'm definitely leaving them. We have Time Warner for our landline, cable internet and digital cable. I will be looking to take our landline off in January and transfer our house # to our cell phone so then we are only paying for a cell phone rather than both. I'm still trying to convince dh to drop our cable to basic cable but he's afraid he'll miss out on some sports!

My husband didn't want to downgrade on the cable either.

When we moved into our current house almost 3 years ago we never had the land line set up. We each have 3000 anytime minutes and have never even come close to going over so it was silly to pay for another phone. In that time twice I have left my phone in the car he took to work (and he works midnights so I was home all night with the kids and no phone) and once grabbed his phone and mine and left him with the kids phoneless. I feel pretty safe against intruders because I have two awesome dogs that would give their lives for us, but I worry about if I had a heart attack or something. Although my children are too young to call 911 anyways. We have great neighbors and one of them is DH best friend so I have walked over there to use their phone on the night I didn't have it. Also we use T-mobile so I can send DH text messages from the computer. I am happy with our decision in our previous house we have a land line and we would go weeks without ever using it, it was such a waste of money.
