I need to get a small ($1,500) loan wihin the next week to replace a furnace. Our bank has recently turned us down, because my husband's credit score is appr. 15 points below their cut off, even though mine is about 15 points above it. since I have no income, I cannot apply for the loan. They didn't mention anything about "borrowing income" if I applied for the loan. i need advice and I need it quickly. wer have a baby due in three weeks and two toddlers. If we can't figure this out we will have to go with another company that will finance the job themselves, at a 0% apr, but it will cost us more than double because our home warranty does not cover them. PLEASE any advice is appreciated!

Have you tried another bank? Different banks have different cutoffs, just like they have different rates.

Find a different way.
Credit policies are soooooo loose right now getting turned down for a loan just might be a sign that you shouldn't be borrowing.
Find another way to obtain the furniture or an alternative. For instance, can you sell some items to pay cash? Can you save up the money? After all, you'll be making the payments anyway so might as well save up that money instead and buy the furniture later. Or you could buy cheaper furniture on the secondary / used market. Or you could not buy anything at all. I'm having a hard time imagining any furniture that is so necessary that it has to be bought urgently, even borrowing money to do so. I've raised children without a crib to put them in and I've never used a changing table.
And I'm totally confused about the home warranty statement. Could you explain that further?

Do you absolutely Have to Have the furnace this week? I am not familiar with the weather in your area, but how long until it gets cold enough to have a furnace on? If you have any time until it gets dire, pull out all your frugal stops. Sell what you can on ebay, if you are doing well as far as baby things go and people are still wondering what they can get yall, have a "furnace fund" they can contribute to to keep the new baby warm and toasty. Use just what you have on hand for groceries, etc. Hillbillyhousewife has a great $45 emergency menu to go by. Desparate times call for desparate measures. I would think you would at least be able to come up with a good size chunk of the $1500 and then maybe if you were asking for a smaller amount the bank would OK it. Also, there are some grants you can get for things like that if you fall into a certain group financlly. Put off the repair as long as you are able in order to raise the money. Hope this helps.

Cookie,
She needs a furnace...not furniture.
Woman, I think you might need another cup of coffee!

Go to or call your county's social services department and see what they can do for you. You may be able to qualify for some assistance through them or maybe they can guide you where to go for help. Contact churches in your area to see if they can help. And ask your family and friends for help. Maybe they know someone who could do the job cheaper and still finance for you. Good luck.

This happened to us when we first bought our house. We needed $2500 for a furness and the bank would not give it to us. The did lend us half and we had to come up with the other half. creepy buggers. Ask them if they will lend you a smaller portion of it. Or, check with a credit union. They are often easier to deal with.

Thanks so much everyone! Cookie, what you said about us not really needing the loan kind of hurt my feelings. We have paid a few bills late this year while adjusting to our new bills etc. with the new home, it is hard to get on a new schedule. This affected my husband's credit score more than we had anticipated. We need the furnace for our babies. I understood your concern, though since you thought it was furniture we were trying to get, hehe. I would NEVER EVER EVER finance furniture at all, lol. I would sit on the floor and sleep on a pallet before even considering it. Our TV went on the fritz last week and wasn't working for a few days since my two year old spat juice on it while I was giving my one year old a bath, ugh. Turns out it just needed to dry. I was all ready to go without the tv, no biggie, then it started working again, lol.
After calling my mortgage company and trying to get them to give us a an emergency waiver/forebearance, for this month's payment and getting asked about our monthly expenses down to how much we spend on diapers, and being refused, I was desperate. The HVAC company we are dealing with is a small company and does not usually offer financing at all. We are with them because they are the only company under our warranty, which is saving us about $3000. I spoke to the owner and threw myself on his mercy. I told him about our babies and how I had exhausted all other resources and was hesitant to apply at another bank, since I didn't want to negatively impact our credit scores with too many checks. He was sooooo, sweet. I told him we could come up with the money from relatives in a month and a half and could come up with $400 next week. We worked it out and after I hung up the phone I just sobbed, I was so relieved. It really helps when you talk to someone as a person rather than as a business. I already put a thank you not in the mail

Oh, I should have mentioned that our home warranty expires next week, so yeah we have to have it done by then or pay triple. We have been living on almost nothing for the past few months so we could come up with the $400 we will be able to put towards it. I have scrimped, sold, saved, couponed and gone without until I could think of nothing else to do. I even dropped one of our cars (we have two fully paid for 1993 dodges) from our insurance when the plates expired and didn't renew them. My husband convinced his employer to give him a raise and more hours so he wouldn't have to find a second job and be less accesible to them. Since he is the manager this was very important to the company. They also bought a public transportation pass for him so our gas costs have gone down. We are trying to sell the car, too. Turns out there is not much market for a 1993 dodge, lol. Once again, thanks everyone!
