I have started waiting one month before I buy any item that costs more than $100. During that month I try to determine if it is a true "need" or just a selfish "want". Recent examples: I had been thinking about buying a new sofa. Ours just wasn't comfortable anymore and the frame was starting to feel shaky. Instead of going out on a impulse and buying a new one, I decided to wait and think about it some more. During that time one of the legs broke off. Now my want has become a need.
Example #2: I want a new car. Is there anything wrong with the one I have? Nope. It's just a minivan and I want a smaller SUV. Am I going to go out and buy a new one this week (like DH hinted at)? Nope. I'm going to give it a month. Chances are the urge will pass when I start thinking about a new car payment. YIKES! If in one month I still have the desire to get a new vehicle, I will start my research on makes and models, used versus new, etc. That will give me the second opportunity to think about whether or not I really NEED a new car.
