Use a cheaper brand powder laundry detergent about a 63 load sized amount. Mix with 12 lbs of baking soda.
The baking soda softens the water, so youll need to use less detergent to get the good cleaning power.

That's a great idea...we have had problems in the past with powder detergents making our clothes and skin itchy...I wonder if the baking soda would also help eliminate that.
