Hello ladies. My husband and I are looking at buying our very own house!!! SO exciting but we cant afford a whole lot which means some of the houses need work. The one we might make an offer on would need carpet in the basement, a fridge and then minor things like paint, etc. Any suggestions on where to shop or how to cut corners?

You can check out any wholesale carpet place, they are usually pretty reasonable with prices. What we do is that, we search there, home depot, lowes, etc, and look for something that's sturdy and that might also be on sale, and then we install it ourselves. We usually spend somewhere in the neighborhood of .79-1.29 a square foot for carpet/padding, and DH installs it himself, saving us the installation/labor fee. It's not very hard to do either. As far as paint goes, you might try your local hardware stores' "oops" paint and see if there are any colors you like. This is paint that someone bought but got it home and didn't like the color so they brought it back, and is usually at least half price. We havent' done this, but I've heard it's a good idea. For fridges or other appliances, you can look on freecycle, or in our case, our local area's website where you post things for sale, or you can look in the local paper for used appliances. We bought our fridge three years ago, used, for $125, and it works fine, and is a fraction of what it would have been new. There are plenty of ways to cut corners, mostly by shopping around and learning to do things yourselves instead of hiring the work out....good luck!!

also for appliances some stores have there scratch n dent area i think lowes has that . it might be scratch or nicked somewhere that u wont notice, like on the side that goes right up next to a wall or something.u can also do the basement at a later time. our basement needs major work but we cant do every thing all at once, so we do what is the most important.
