Does anyone know anything frugal you can do to your air filter that will improve the smell of your house? I do love candles but I don't burn them in summer. It seems kinda crazy to heat up a house I am paying too much to cool. I do the cinnamon on the stove as well. Boiling the water also helps humidify my house in the cold weather.

I have never done the cinnamon & water -- have to try that. The Fabreeze thing - that is a great idea and it helps on the static too in your house! I've been doing that for years (my old job we use to do that in the office cause we worked in an old building).

Thanks for all of the great ideas.

I made homemade febreeze today & loved it! The "recipe" that I found online was 4 tablespoons of fabric softener and filled the rest w/water (32oz bottle) The nice thing about this is you get to pick your fragrance!! I just reused my empty febreeze bottle which happens to be 32oz.

This was perfect strength. I wouldn't use more. I went around spraying everything I could. I had my sheets on the line drying, I went out there and sprayed them too.

My husband loves to simmer vanilla extract in water on the stove to get the house smelling nice. Just an idea if you get tired of the cinnamon sticks and orange/lemon peels!

Thanks for the recipe. I think I use even less than that, though. I just "eye it", and if I had to measure it, I'd say I actually use about a Tablespoon of fab. softener at most. (Sorry, Fabreeze!! Making your own is SO much cheaper!!) And you're right - you get to pick your scent making it yourself!! The next time I buy fab. softener, I'm going to try something lavender-scented!!

And I just re-read my earlier post...I think I wrote "with a bit of water", when I meant it the other way around...to add "a bit of fab. softener" - to a bottle of water.

Other great things to heat on the stove to get a great smell: orange peels, fresh pine.

Also, I buy the "clip" car air freshners from walmart for my car - they clip in the car vent to make it smell good. I got to thinking.....and put one in the register in our bathroom.

I did break down and put a plug in oil-glade thing in the "boys" bathroom - yuk, boys are just gross and stinky - its worth the money....hahahaha

The most I do is send the dog outside when he has gas. That dog can really clear a room.

I bought a candle warmer and it seems to do pretty good. The candles last alot longer than burning them and you can make your own scents if you use unscented candles.

I make my own febreeze using water and essential oils.
