Yesterday we got our monthly electric bill and it was almost 50% HIGHER. We have gas heat and live in Indiana, so usually in the wYinter, our electric bill goes down and our gas bill goes up. Our gas bill is almost normal, but our electric bill is sky-high for this time of year. The only major things in our home that are electric are the washer, dryer, and stove. The water heater and home heating are both gas.

My sons were sick this past month and we ran TWO vaporizers almost every night. (Vicks steam vaporizers) That is really the only thing out of the norm that we did. Cooking and baking have been about the same, as well as laundry.

Do vaporizers really use that much energy? We also have a small portable cool-mist humidifier, but we had it last year and didn't really notice any difference in our electric bill. We have a computer, but we've had it for the past 6 months and hadn't noticed anything abnormal in our electric usage.

I can't think of what could be causing this huge jump! Maybe it's something obvious and I am just not thinking of it. Does anyone have any suggestions? Also, do you have any great tips on reducing electric usage (besides turning off lights, etc) ?

Thanks so much... and MERRY CHRISTMAS! My sons woke me up at 5:15am this morning, so I am going to collapse in bed as soon as I'm done typing this. ZZZZZZZZ.....

My electricity bill usually goes down during the winter too, but I ran a vicks vaporizer during December and part of January. I got my electricity bill the other day, and it had gone up from last month by almost $120. The only difference was running the vaporizer. You wouldn't think that that thing would cost that much to run, but I don't know why else my bill would have jumped so much.

Me too! I'm glad to hear your answer. I was worried that I was the only one with this kind of worry! I've been racking my mind for other possible reasons why the electric is so high, and haven't come up with anything but the darn vaporizers! Thanks for posting your reply on this one!!!!

I haven't been running a vaporizer but we have 2 ultrasonic humidifiers running in the girls rooms.

I also have air purifiers in the bedrooms. I've been debating getting rid of them. I don't think they do that much.

My bill was $40 more than usual and I'm on the average payment plan.

I also have 2 humidifiers that we run in the wintertime--one upstairs, one downstairs. But we ran them last winter too and I didn't notice the spiked electric bill. So, I am assuming it was the vaporizers. Still, I am not 100% sure what is causing it! Weird.

hmm, we just got a humidifier for the baby's room and our electric did go up - but we just moved here so I don't have last year to compare it to. Supposedly you save on gas $ with a humidifier or vaporizer because you are comfortable at lower temperatures.

We have a warm mist humidifier and our bill did jump up - we realized that it was christmas lights and the oven which was baking cakes for Christmas continously.

On my defense, our house's lights were the best in our area
