I know late in the year for this but i was just wondering. My windows are a little over a year old. Would you put plastic up on them or not? My husband says there is no need for it but i just wonder. I have a sliding door as well any tips for that? We still will have a lot of colder days ahead. It usually stays cold here up until end of March or April.

For windows that new you should not need plastic. I have plastic on my bedroom windows but they are 25+ years old. Do they get condensation on them? That is a good clue if they need plastic.

No, no condensation on them. They do however get budged somehow from time to time and i have to reopen and lock them to keep the breeze out.

Really? You shouldn't have to do that...who installed them?

we had new windows put in, in November and they started to get condensation on them. I called the company who put them in and they said that it was humity. Because it was on the inside and not between the glass.

So I bought a dehumifier and now no more condensation.

I also had one that I couldn't raise enough to get it to fold down to clean the outside from the inside. They came back out and adjusted the window and now it is fine.

Call them and tell them what it is doing. The company i went thru has a lifetime transferable warrenty. Even if i break the glass they will replace it free.

I have heard that the rule of thumb is touch the window. In the winter if you touch the window and it is cold, then air is getting in and you should put plastic up. And opposite for summer, if the window is hot, of course you don't put plastic up in the summer but then you know heat is coming in the house.

A side note. We have very, very, very old single pane windows. We have never done plastic before and our gas bill always runs about $500 a month. (very old, leaky house let me tell ya!!!) This year we decided to try it. Our gas bill is still insane but it is only $350 a month this year. So the plastic helped tremendously!! The day we put the plastic up I was standing there holding the plastic at the window and my hair was blowing every time the wind would blow. That shows you how bad our windows are.

That doesn't make sense though...LOL. Touch the glass? The glass would be cold, even if it was a newer window if it was cold outside, how does that have a bearing on whether or not it's leaking?

You didn't mention, did you get single or double? Did you get the argon gas in them?

We just installed double pain, low-e, argon gas windows. When the sales man was at our house, he actually had a blow torch and got the outside of the glas up to 150 degrees. The inside window stayed at room temperature!

So if you do touch the glas and its cold (it might be cool, but shouldn't be cold) then you know air is somehow coming in. (The extra pain of glass and the space inbetween should prevent any outside temperatures changing the inside temperatures). If you're concerned about it, contact your installer. Windows that new shouldnt need any modifying to keep energy bills out.

Oh, ask them if they have any type of a guarrantee. If your heating bill doesn't go down this year b/c of the new windows, they give you money back. Some companies do this.
