I would recommend tile over vinyl. We re-did a kitchen with vinyl and when we went to put the appliances back in, well there were some tears and gouges.
It sounds like a small space where the tile wouldn't be that much and you could definitely tile yourself. I would put tile underneath your appliances, but it's probably not necessary for your cabinet.
With the front loaders, if you use them side-by-side, I highly recommend getting the storage drawer for underneath them. It brings the washer and dryer up higher and there is not so much bending. You won't think you want or need the storage, but your back will be so happy with you!
