LOL!My sil used to wash all her dishes by hand and her kids were always at the Dr.'s with something. She started using the dishwasher for silverware and glasses and they are so much healthier now.We credit the high heat of the dishwasher.

That's interesting...my kids are never sick. Bob had a cold this year for a couple days and that was it.

I did mention to my husband what everyone has said here, kind of hinting for a dishwasher...he just laughed.

If i waited for a full load, it would be a week before i would run it. Then everything would be dried on, and i would have to wash it by hand anyways. My dishwasher seems to run forever.. so i just wash by hand.. unless we have company and large amount of dishes.

Some place I have lived had a dishwasher and some didn't. Through it all, I mostly handwash.

I am not convinced that a dishwasher can save you anything. Even Energy Star use some electricity and half a sink of water can't be significantly different.

I am also not convinced that a dishwasher is healthier, Yes, if it heats up your hot water it does technically kill more germs, but these are everyday bugs that a healthy immune system should be able to withstand. The germs to worry about are the ones from other people in public places. I heard a health officer say most home kitchens wouldn't pass a restaurant kitchen inspection and needn't because it is our own germs floating around.

We use a dishwasher. I like that it washes at temps high enough to kill germs. Our older children have to help with the dishes- either loading or unloading the dishwasher. The one time we didn't have a dishwasher I came down with food poisoning. I think it was from an improperly washed fork or spoon.

This is what I ALWAYS say! We share germs in our house. I kiss the same lips that touch the forks and food that my family eats.

I use my dishwasher and it runs every other day for the five people in my house. (I am VERY good at maximizing what goes in the dishwasher, but I also use paperplates -- which i KNOW is wasteful I am trying to get away from it.)

I air dry the dishes. My dishwasher is new and more energy efficient than the old one. It also doesn't use much water. (I can hear it when it runs new water in and it isn't much.)

I cannot wash with water hot enough to kill all the germs on my dishes and such. While I agree that most of the germs are "family germs" if I cook raw meat in my kitchen -- there are other possible problems such as e coli or salmonella -- I feel better using the dishwasher.

i have a dishwasher, brand new, never used, in my kitchen! it's been sitting for 5 years and has never been run once! i refuse to use it.

my grandmother used to wash dishes the old fashioned way, and i remember being amazed as a 7 year old little girl and how granma used to be able to dip her hands in SCOLDING hot water and wash those dishes (she never used cold water--EVER, not even to cool down the water! ). i would see the steam rising from the water, and on her hands as she scrubbed, and it amazed me.

i think those memories of my grandmother keep me from using a dishwasher, and they also keep me mopping floors the old fashioned way (bucket water and scolding hot water and bleach)!

i wash dishes in a sink full of hot water, a dab of bleach, and a squirt of a QUALITY dishwashing liquid. then i transfer the dishes to a stream of steaming hot clean water, dry and put them away.

if there are only a FEW dishes, i will just squirt the detergent on the dishrag/sponge, scrub them up, and rinse and dry them.

but i never used my dishwasher, so i don't know if i am saving money or not. but i am sure that i am because my dishwashing liquid costs me only 1.00 per container with my coupons and the hot water is included in my rent :P
