Uses of Baking Soda

Burns, bites, and more - To soothe the skin rashes from sunburn or poison ivy add a box of baking soda to a warm bath. Insect bites, make a paste of water and baking soda and cover the area. The baking soda will soothe the skin.

Toothpaste – In case you run out just brush with baking soda.

Clean vinyl – Make a paste of water, baking soda, use a couple of drops of lemon juice. Use the mixture to clean the vinyl.

Deodorant – Rub baking soda underneath arms when you run out of deodorant. It will remove odor and dampness. (I haven’t tried this one but if anyone has please let us know if it works)

Slip rubber gloves on easily – Pour a little of baking soda in glove and shake.

Get the stink out of the dog – Message baking soda through dog’s fur then brush out.

Cat odors – Sprinkle the cat litter box with the baking soda to help with the odor.

Odor eater – Open box where ever smells are. Replace box when needed or every two months.

Diaper Rash – Mix baking soda with warm water not into a paste and rub on baby’s behind.

Kill fleas in carpet – Mix baking soda with citronella or rosemary and sprinkle on carpet then vacuum up to kill fleas.

Carpet freshener – Sprinkle baking soda on carpet let sit for a little and then vacuum.

Fabric softener – Add ˝ cup of baking soda to your rinse cycle.

Vegetable insecticide – Dust broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and brussels sprouts with baking soda for natural pesticide.

Prevent moss – Sprinkle baking soda around effected area.

Side walks deicer – Sprinkle baking soda and sand on ice and snow. It won’t ruin sidewalk like salt will.

Clean and kill bacteria on wooden countertops and cutting boards – Sprinkle baking soda over the wood surface and then put enough vinegar to create bubbling.

What are other things you use baking soda for? Have you tried any of the things listed? Do tell.

It's so funny that I just saw this thread, b/c I've been thinking about this. I'm trying a few things in Diane Irons' book, Bargain Beauty Secrets, and just rinsed off a baking soda cleansing face mask. Just make a paste of baking soda and water, smooth it over your skin, and rinse off with tepid water after 15 minutes. It's the first time I've done it, but my face feels really clean without being very tight. Hopefully it'll work well, as my skin is just awful after tons of pregnancy acne and other problems.

i use baking soda in the oven....i have to do it today actually...i sprinkle lots of baking soda on the areas dirty, pour on the vinegar and let it sit for one hour( i will walk the kids to school and walk back) and then use good old fashion elbow grease and rub it all off and it cleans as i do this...might take two times to clean but it smells nicer...no harsh fumes and i can use the oven right away.

I mix it with Dawn dishsoap to make a paste and use it to clean my cooktops as a gentle abrasive.

When ds had diaper rash I would pour baking soda into his bathwater and it seemed to help it clear up much quicker. I also sprinkle it on my carpet before I vacuum as a carpet deodorizer.

I use it on my stove's cooktop and it works great. Before I vacuum, I sprinkle it on carpets that tend to be a little stinky (especially when it's humid in the summer). I also have used it on the kids in the tub when they are itchy with rashes. I have made the paste to put on insect bites many times. Baking soda is good stuff! But, I've never heard of using it on sidewalks as a de-icer. I'm going to have to try one that next winter. Thanks!

I've used baking soda for both a facial cleanser in the shower and as a deodorant. It works great!

Keep an opened box in the refrigerator to make it smell fresher.

Keep a box near the stove. It can be used to put out a grease fire.

Sprinkle in the sink to clean.

My daughters GYN told her to put a cup of baking soda in about 2 or 3 inches of bath water and soak for vaginal itching. She said women should do this instead of using a douche.

Rub tough meats with some and let sit in frig for an hour or so to Tenderize Meats
Reduce acids in high-acid recipes with a pinch.
Reduce gas producing properties in beans. Add a pinch to beans when cooking.
