Has anyone ever reupholstered a couch or chair? I have a couch and chair that are wearing out, but I love them and am also trying to do the 'reuse' thing. I've heard that it's just as expensive to have them redone as it would be to buy new. Anybody have experience with this?

Reupholstering can be very expensive. Whether it is "just as expensive" as buying new depends on if you are buying quality furniture or junk. We bought our living room sofa in 1992. It was on sale for $1200 from $2000. I told my DH that it would be worth it to have a solidly constructed piece that we could reupholster if we loved the style enough to keep it. We had it recovered in 2001 and it cost $900.

We paid $700 (on sale) for a family room sofa in 1995. We trashed it in 2004 because the frame actually BROKE. The wood BROKE.

So, if you buy cheap furniture, it's not worth it to reupholster. If you buy expensive furniture (or quality vintage pieces), it is. In my opinion anyway.

Yep...it's often just as expensive, if not more to reupholster. Just depends on the fabric you choose, the style of the item being reuphostered etc

Slipcovers can sometimes be slightly cheaper. I helped my Mom with some legwork on two chairs she wanted reuphostered. They weren't in disrepair, she just didn't like the fabric. The chairs were very nice quality though, so worth reuphostering for her. When I did price checking, chairs of that style and quality would have been between $800 and $1200 EACH to replace. To reuphoster it would have cost $600ish each. Slipcovers were $400ish each.
