My son wants a sno cone machine. In an effort to simplify - I don't really want to buy one. My blender doesn't seem to smash the ice the same way. Has anyone else come up with ideas for "home made" slushies.

I see the "juice" at Target and I am all set to buy that but if the ice looks different - he wont be happy!!
TIA
Heather

our snow cone maker only cost about $20 at Target...............it was SO worth it!!!! There is nothing like a real snow cone (we put ours in a bowl and eat it with a spoon)

cheap and fun treats

It is totally worth buying it (I know that you said that you didn't want to)

I agree that the machine is the only way to go if you want the true sno-cone texture. We got one last year and it's awesome!

We bought all the flavorings at Target but my kids aren't that interested in them because they're just too sweet for them. I have 4 nearly full bottles...too bad you don't live near me, I'd drop them off! LOL!

We like to freeze different juices, drinks and sodas and us the cubes to make sno-cones. The cubes of juice seem 'softer' somehow and grind up really well/easily. Maybe try that in your blender? Favorites are our house are grape juice, cranberry juice, homemade lemonade and root beer.

Good luck!

Thx (Root beer sounds great). I may just buy it. I just didn't want another 'machine' in the kitchen that doesn't get used. I thought somebody might have figured out how to cut the ice without the machine. Okay, heading to ebay!!!

my blender has an ice setting - maybe check yours. freezing juice and grinding the ice up sounds delish - we might have to try that!

We got our sno-cone machine at Wal-Mart several years ago...I bought it on a whim. It was on end of season clearance...I think I paid $9 for it. We use it a lot....I used to make myself SUPER huge ones, in a big cup. LOL Try Freecycle or Craigslist before buying new, and also yard/garage sales.
