I would really like to get a good air purifier for my son's room (about 12x16). I'm looking for something with low maintenance costs (replacement filters/energy use) and a good track record.
Anyone have one they love? Are there any to avoid? I feel like there are soooo many out there that I don't know where to begin looking.

My mom got me the one from Shakley that is supposed to be rated high. It needs a filter change once a year. She gets a discount so I don't know how much it costs normally.

I used room-space air purifiers and didn't like them. I'm a light sleeper and the noise bothered me, plus everytime I left the room, the purifier no longer worked for me. Instead, we installed a whole house electronic filter onto our furnace. It is so much nicer. And for maintenance, all you do is wash the filter - no replacements.

I'd definitely go with one where you don't have to buy extra filters.

I'd recommend searching online for those sites that sell equipment for those with allergies/etc. and look for some brands there. And, get a HEPA. Some say they are "HEPA-like", but I'd stay with a true HEPA.

get one where you can wash the filters by hand. This will save lots of money.

First I have to say, wow your son has a large room!

We have an Oreck air purifier. We ordered it from their website. There is a silent mode, and you can turn it up if needed, but the higher you turn it up, the louder it is. You wash the filter by hand. We bought the off brand cleaner at our local Oreck store. I think the bottle of cleaner was around $9 and it will last a long time. We really like our air purifier it works really well.

We were in Goodwill last week and saw a man walking around with one and we were talking to him about it. He got that thing for $30!!! We were jealous that we didn't find it first!

Yeah, we live in an old two-bedroom house. They made bedrooms so much larger "back in the day."
Oh my goodness! I wish so badly that I could find a good one in a thrift store. I'd probably need to be revived!

Thanks ladies for the responses. I'm not too worried about the noise since ds sleeps with a fan in his room and actually sleeps better with that bit of white noise.
