When my DD was younger and needed the room to be dark, we draped a fleece blanket over her curtain rod. It worked really well, and we just took it down after she woke up.

I really like the cardboard idea, that is a good one.

yeah, I did that before and it helped...but now he's in the room with two big windows. so it would take atleast 4 blankets, and that would be difficult to get down (using a chair to get them up and down, etc.)

I'm now trying to figure out where I can get some big enough cardboard!!

I bought them (just got back) and my DH is taking a nap so when he wakes I'm going to see if that will work. If so, it will cost about $24. Still not as cheap as I would like....but I couldn't find any "Blackout" fabric at walmart for $3/yrd like I had heard some talk about. Thats the only fabric store in my small town....

Has anyone ever used those accordian peel & stick curtain things? Do they work to take out almost all the light??
Watch out for the black out shades at Walmart. The shades are great (I own them), but there is only one panel in each package for $25....you would need 2 packages for EACH window....The panels are very narrow too, I tried to be frugal and use only 1 per window, but they are about 6" too narrow to do that. I work midnights, and although expensive, the black-out shades were a necessity.......sleeping at high noon is not easy.

Call your local office supply store or appliance store.........they always have big boxes from filing cabinets, office chairs, washing machines, etc.

I used to use a cardboard panel for naps and early mornings, but when I redecorated my son's room I found two throw blankets on clearance at Target that color coordinated. They are heavier than curtains, but then the light doesn't come through! I purchased clip curtain rings (they just pinch clip on to any material and then have a ring to slide on to a curtain rod) - available anywhere (JCPenny's often has them on clearance) and presto, I had no-sew, cheap, blackout curtains! Best of all, they look great unlike the cardboard or anything that I would be able to sew.

If you are a sewer you can also buy a dark color fabric that coordinates with his room and double it for the curtains. This is what we did for DD's room and it worked great.

They had different sizes. They can't custom make them though. I will try and see if I can find them online

I use flannel backed table cloths. You can use thumb tacks, double sided tape, sew a pocket for a rod, or use the clips like PP suggested.

I got blackout curtains at Big Lots for $10 each panel. The panels are 48 inches wide, I think. Possibly 60.
