This is an Australian article, so some of the terminology is different. I wonder what "chooks" are? Chickens?

There are definitely pros and cons to the '50's housewife lifestyle. We could never hope to work as hard as my mom and her friends worked! I remember my mom standing in front of the ironing board with several baskets of laundry to be ironed. Actually, that was the '60's because she would iron and watch The Mike Douglas Show at the same time. She didn't have a microwave, and actually in the '50's, she had a wringer washer and a clothesline. She did make our clothes, and my dad had a garden. I remember that mom went shopping on Friday night when dad came home with the car (and probably the paycheck).

I do remember that all of the housewives in the neighborhood would get together a couple of times a week for "coffee break". Someone would have made coffee cake, and I remember that we kids were not allowed to interrupt the conversation! I guess that was their Mommysavers time!

Interesting article. I see a return to some of the basics but the thing I like the most about it ... we have a choice! It's not expected that we (as women) will grow up and be housewives. Nor is it an expectation that we'll all go on and have power careers. Sometimes, a place right in the middle ... that's where I want to be!

Interesting article. I was wondering what "new cocooning" meant.

But, here is my thought. We are lucky as women to have the option to stay home or work or even both. We have completly redefinded the 50's house wife. Today we have amazing technology that makes many of our daily tasks much easier and less consuming. For example, wrinkle free shirts, microwaves, hamburger helper, and so much more.

With the extra time that we have as a house wife, I think many of use like to spend more one on one time with our kids. We schedule play dates at various locations, join Mom's clubs, and are even more involved with our children's education.

Personally, I think sewing is a great way to get that custom look for less. Magazines give us such wonderful ideas about how to dress or decorate. So often the custom products are far too expensive for the common person. When we learn a new skill that creats something usable and creative we feel good!

Frankly, home grown veggies are just much tastier!!!!
