Is this the 1st time you've heard this? I've heard people have had to contact their credit card company & have them start denying the charges cuz AOL refused to cancel their service. I believe people are starting to record their call to cancel & sue the company now for not doing as they are asking.

This happened to my brother and the reason my mom is still with them. She loves AOL, though. They did some weird things. They finally contacted her and said the card number she was using expired. She inquired in to why they hadn't mentioned it to her before, considering she had been charged every month and then asked when it expired. 1996!!!! Ten years ago.

I have also heard they are great about lowering their prices to keep you as a customer.

I'm surprised they don't fine you big time for canceling credit cards or changing bank accounts.

I work in IT - and I can say from personal and technical experience... I HATE AOL. Once installed it's impossible to remove from a computer - bloated piece of junk... grrr.

I had horror stories about trying to cancel AOL so when I called to cancel last year I said my computer had been stolen. They tried to get me to keep my account (for a lesser amount) so that when I got a new computer I would be all ready to go. I said no I didn't want to do that. Nearly 15 minutes later, after talking to numerous people, lying about how I had no computer, they finally cancelled my account. But then they gave a phone number and a website where I could go to get inexpensive computers and could get my AOL hooked back up. Unbelievable.

So, a word of warning: if you are wanting to leave AOL for another carrier, NEVER tell them that you are going to someone else. You will never, ever get off the phone. I usually don't advocate lying, but in this case, it was the only way.

I think they are hard up for customers? I had AOL free for 6 months. I cancelled with no problems. I was firm and stuck with wanting to cancel. I didnt get hassled, maybe times have changed since I cancelled, about 3 yrs ago.

When we had AOL about 4 years ago, they gave us no problems in canceling via phone. (Didn't offer us free time either) Of course they never cancelled us, just kept billing us. *Repeated calls to them, and we were told it takes time to stop the direct billing from our bank card. *They would credit the money back to our card. *After 3 months and no reimbursement we finally had to contact the bank to stop the payment. *Our bank told us that AOL is horrible for this tactic. *After a few filed complaints reguarding AOL, their response was we never notified them we wanted to cancel, instead they canceled us after our bank repeatedly denied payment for their service.
You are right Grey about the "bloated piece of junk". *Partly why we canceled is our computer went down. *We were told it was AOL and their crap on the machine that caused our computer to crash.
