... At least that's what former president Jimmy Carter thinks.

"I live in the South, and I've seen the South come a long way, and I've seen the rest of the country that shares the South's attitude toward minority groups at that time, particularly African-Americans."

"That racism inclination still exists, and I think it's bubbled up to the surface because of belief among many white people -- not just in the South but around the country -- that African-Americans are not qualified to lead this great country. It's an abominable circumstance, and it grieves me and concerns me very deeply," Carter said.

What do you think? Does Jimmy Carter have it right, or do you disagree?

I can honestly say that my opposition to Obama has nothing to do with race. I don't agree with his politics, period. I didn't agree with Hillary Clinton either, and it wasn't cuz she was a woman!

I am sure that there are some people that oppose him purely b/c of his race/color of skin.

However the majority of his opposition oppose him b/c of his politcs pure and simple.

I don't dislike him because of his race. I disagree with the way he is leading our country. If I liked his politics and believed he was qualified to run this country I could care less if he was purple ( don't think there is any race that considers themselves purple just trying to make a point and be politically correct) . I just think this is the crutch they fall back on because someone disagrees with him.

Sadly there are alot of people that don't like him based on his skin color alone where I live. I personally do not feel that way of course since I voted for him.

I'm sure there are folks who dislike him because of his politics (your average republican) and those who dislike him because of his race (your average racist). Unfortunately, I also think that escalated tempers flaring is resulting in some race-baiting, and for some folks who might normally conceal mild racism to say things they might normally keep to themselves. My father, who identifies as strong conservative, could not believe how bad the Bush presidency was and constantly complained that the dems were not doing what they needed to do to counter Bush & his policies. But when election time came, he didn't want McCain, but he sure wasn't going to vote for the black guy. So, yes - race does play a role. For SOME.

I guess I'm just wondering how much of a factor it really is. Where I live (MN) I honestly don't know anyone who opposes him on race alone. Is this sentiment held mostly with our parents/grandparents generation? Mostly in the south?

On the flip side, don't you also think there are probably those that support him solely based on race, simply due to the fact that he's not a white man?

Does it all even out?

It is a dangerous turn when dissent and discussion is silenced with the threat that it is racist. It is the cornerstone of our democracy to be able to speak out against things you disagree with. That is how we come to a better solution than one side or the other would come up with on their own.
It feels like discrimination to me that I can't speak my mind just because I am a white girl and it might be perceived as racist.

Having read a couple of Carter's books, I see where he is coming from by making this statement. Do I agree, yes, I do on many levels. While I do not think everyone is judging Obama on his skin tone, I do believe some people do actually and maybe even more are doing it without even being aware.
