Worker: I was fired for wearing ‘God’ button - Local business- msnbc.com

I can understand their rules but I don't think he should have been fired over it. That just seems extreme to me especially since it was from The Pledge of Allegiance.

He was offered an alternative that was acceptable for the dress code, and refused it. If you refuse to follow the rules, you're subject to dismissal.

I have to agree. I know it really stinks that people can't choose to wear thier love for God and country. When you choose not to abide by the dress code, whatever that may be, you make the choice to be unemployed.

I'd like to think the the same consequence would happen though to someone wearing something opposite.

Yep, dress codes are mandatory, and any company I've worked for laid out the dress code requirements at orientation. There are many good reasons for dress codes, and their strict enforcement. Job is job, everything else is left at the door.

All I can say is "Wow" to the article and to the people that believe he should have been fired or been disciplined...what is this country coming too when people cannot even wear a verse from this country's pledge of allegiance on a pin to work????? If people have a problem with God and God being in the Pledge of Allegiance then sue our great country, not fire lowbies who are working to make ends meet. I'm really getting sick of companies and people bending over backwards to make sure not to step on people's toes when it comes to God and the USA!!

Now I have to find the article where people are been evicted from an apartment complex in NY if they display the American Flag because the management doesn't want to offend anyone!

I'm betting if he wore a pentagram button he would have received complaints at some point or another. Our country isn't "coming to" anything. It's been this way for ages. He specifically chose to use this button to display personal beliefs, NOT the national support he claims. If that were the case then the "United We Stand" button should have been more than acceptable. He made his bed. He shouldn't be surprised that he can't tell his bosses what he will and will not wear when they're the ones footing the bill.

Exactly. If I violate the dress code at work, I will be told to go home and change. If I refuse, or if I continue to wear items that violate my employer's dress code, I can be fired.
I have a button with a picture of Stonehenge and the caption "Give me that old-time religion." I don't wear it to work, nor do I consider it a violation of my right to freedom of speech or freedom of religion to not be able to do so. I don't go to work to proclaim my religious or political views. I go to work to do the job I am paid to do. Any political or religious statements I want to make, whether with my voice or my clothing/jewelry, I do on my own time.

I imagine you must not have worked many jobs w/a dress code. I've worked for EDS for 19 years and I've seen when men could not have facial hair, hair below a certain length, a pierced ear. I had to wear skirts or dresses or dress suits, not even pant suits. Even hosiery style was enforced.

Now, we are allowed to be much more casual, but we are not allowed to wear any shirt or jacket that has an emblem or writing on it. So a button such as this would also not be allowed. A flag pin would, as would something like crucifix jewelry, star of david jewelry, yalmulke, etc.

When you work for a company w/ a dress code, you respect the dress code or you don't work there. This is standard operating procedure. Not anything this country is "coming to."

Just about anywhere you work, there are dress codes and rules. You can follow them and collect a paycheck or if you don't agree with them, you can look for work elsewhere.

Yes, a button with a quote from the pledge of allegiance seems pretty innocent but what if the next employee wanted to wear a button that says "Jesus Sucks" or "I hate the USA"? There is no way a company would let that happen so they can't let any other kind of button happen either.

I do feel for the guy though. But if that is your belief and your passion, wear your button to church, out to dinner, out with friends, everywhere you go on your own personal time.

What I think is stupid about it is he had been wearing the pin at work for well over a year and all of a sudden it was a problem.
