Racy MySpace pics spark school lawsuit - Education- msnbc.com

I wish kids would understand that it's not a good idea to post pics like that. It didn't have anything to do with school so I don't see why they stepped in to discipline.

The disciplinary action involved extra-curricular activities, and since the article mentions the coaches board I am assuming the girls were involved in athletics. Most schools have very strict rules for athletes which encompass activities outside of school, too - if an athlete is caught drinking or engaging in illegal or inappropriate behavior they are either suspended from the team or removed from the team altogether. I know when I was involved in athletics I had to sign a code of conduct and you can bet that if I had been caught doing something against that code my parents would have punished me and certainly not pursued a lawsuit against the school.

Extra-curricular activities are a privilege, not a right. It's not like they suspended the girls from school itself.

I know of many that have been suspended from extra-curricular activities even back in the 1970's for behaviors and/or breaking of school rules. This is nothing new....with the exception of the online aspect of things. We recently had suspensions from one of our choral groups for far less offensive actions.

How is taking a picture of yourself at home in your underwear licking a piece of candy any of the school's business?
If eating candy in your undies was a violation of my school's code of conduct, it's a good thing no one was taking pictures of me scarfing down Reese's pieces in my Bullwinkle bra and matching panties.

Well it says the pictures were passed around the school, so it wasn't just online. And they were in athletics. That is normal to be kicked off a team for something like that.

So punish the kids that were passing the pix around school - it doesn't say that the girls were the ones passing them around.
It's just wrong, IMO, for a school to punish kids at school for things that happened outside of school, and during summer break to boot.

They need to learn like everyone else. If you're going to do something that you don't want others to know about then don't photograph it.

I definately think there should be some punishment on this.....it did disrupt school, because the pictures were there at school being passed around. Also I don't care who you are but the pictures they took were absolutely done in a provocative manner, its not like they were just sitting around there house in undies eating candy. THey posed for these pictures...If anything I hope it teaches these girls a lesson. Girls today don't realize how much they disrespect themselves when they do stuff like that.

I just can't see the freedom of speech angle on this. They are taking away the privilege to participate, not a right to participate. They are facing the consequences of their actions. It's a well known fact that to be part of extra-cirricular activities your grades AND conduct are up for review. There were no minced words in our school handbooks about it. The school must enforce the rules or what's the point of making them?

Why aren't their parents ashamed and disgusted? LOOK at what your daughters are doing for fun! What else are they doing while unsupervised? I certainly wouldn't be asking for more attention by bringing in the media spotlight...

Guess it's better for them to learn this lesson now instead of never being hired b/c their perspective bosses checked their myspace pages, which most do. Character matters!

BUT YES! If you put pictures on a public forum you are giving them to others. EVEN IF, the myspace pages were private, if ONE of the students from their school was on their friends list, they DID in fact, distribute their pics to the student body of that school.

I do not want my daughter posting pics of herself with phallic confections, however if she were to do something like this I would NEVER remove her from extra curriculars! That is totally backwards logic! Let's take these teens and remove them from structured activities and see what happens! Does that make any sense? The fact that they had to apologize to the ALL MALE coaching staff ticks me off to no end. Those guys were probably getting off looking at the pics and felt guilty for it and forced these young girls into a humiliating apology! That's CRAZY! Parents should discipline here NOT school officials! They should be taught that there are consequences for posting private images on the web. Maybe the girls should have to work at a counseling clinic for victims of sexual assualt/abuse. LET THE PUNISHMENT FIT THE CRIME HERE!!! I am stunned that anyone feels this is proper punishment! SERIOUSLY?!?!?!
