I think I'm going to stick with the party hats and cake. Benni doesn't need castles...maybe made from playskool.

"parents of young children are doing more of these extravagant parties as a way to impress their friends and validate their own self-worth." "They want to be able to show family and friends that they have made it, that they have this money to spend," she said. "It's a reflection more of the (desires of the) parents than the child."

I think this is utterly wasteful. Then people wonder why they can't afford the basics - like gas and food. And do we even wonder why kids today are so demanding and expect things we would never have dreamed of? I can just imagine my mom throwing me a princess party that cost $10,000. Yeah, in my dreams.

Nauseating. No wonder kids nowadays have entitlement issues.

This is just sickening. Those are going to be the kids who grow up expecting to have the world handed to them on a silver platter. Coming soon, the next MTV special, "My Super 6-year-old" .

I think I'm a mean mommy. Everyone is asking me what I'm doing for dd's first birthday. I'm going to have a quiet cake and ice cream at home with 2-3 presents - nothing big at all. I did a nice party for ds's first bday and have great pix, but it was too much for him. He slept through most of it! DS had a great big zoo party for his 6th birthday and that cost us $250. That is my upper limit, I think. We'll see as he gets older. It is amazing how competitive people are with these things.

Wow, I think I feel extremely guilty for spending $100 on a party. Most of the time it's no where near that.

heck all i ever do is a birthday cake and some presents and our familes come for cake. and this past year for cayties first ever friends b-day we went for a wagon ride pulled by horses that didn't cost us anything as it was dh's uncle that did it. and i bought some supplies for goody bags. no wonder the kids nowadays are screwed in the heads, and by these parents examples, its not going to change anytime soon. atleast we are all good mommies lol.
